sometimes there’s something magical about computers. i have a pikvm attached to my main homelab “server”, and i wanted to upgrade the server’s bios, and i didn’t want to find any of my 1 million usb drives, so i created a virtual drive on the pikvm and am exposing it to the server over usb. this convenience feels fantastic

RE: https://mastodon.social/@cmconseils/116954317926627289 heh. i watched about 80% of the 2000s battlestar galactica series on an ipod classic— torrenting the show and transcoding it to fit on the device then watching the show every day on my lunch break. you’d think that would absolutely destroy the viewing experience but i was still enthralled by the show so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

gross - the flingo/SambaTv ACR is atrocious. it’s amazing how much snitchware is built into modern televisions. https://jmason.ie/2026/07/18/163818a.html

went to my favourite restaurant in seattle yesterday ( https://www.moonlightcafeseattle.com/ ) and it was completely filled with a giant family gathering, but were still doing takeout. while waiting for my order, the owner sat with me and we did shots together and chatted about about veganism - man, she’s the absolute best and i love this place so so much. #vegan #seattle

automating the signup process feels critical for an open registration instance. over the past couple of months i’ve been iterating on a simple little app that receives web hooks from mastodon on signup and reports. it: - checks email and ip reputation of the signup - sends a welcome message if both are clean - holds back on welcome message if either are bad and messages me - suspends any suspicious signups after an hour if they haven’t posted or followed anyone - immediately suspends if both e...

running `bastille pkg ALL upgrade -y` and getting stuck in a bug where pkg is trying to upgrade itself but never does. a quick little fix of: `bastille cmd $JAIL env ASSUME_ALWAYS_YES=yes pkg bootstrap -f` and some manual spot checking to ensure that some packages didn't get removed (like postfix was removed... :/ ) #FreeBSD #bastille #pkg

i'm seeing my beautiful boys tonight. i have tickets to see them today in oakland, and again on sunday in seattle. they were my favourite band in the 90s, and i've continued to absolutely love them over the decades, but this will be the *first* time ever seeing them in person! i'm very excited #pavement #concert https://pavementband.com/

i didnt sleep at all last night — got a bunch of work done, so i took today off as a sick day to try to recover; of course i’m now sitting in bed watching youtube and drinking coffee (8:35am) which is not helping with this whole not sleeping thing.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@bagder/116914623057028233 curious how FOSS projects that have a no LLM policy would handle a PR that came with an ai developed fix along with the report. (literally have no idea if any of these bug hunters ever bothered to try to fix the issue.. just curious if the project maintainers would bend their stance)

i quite enjoy my job and am not currently looking for other opportunities, but i occasionally daydream about getting a city job as a computer toucher. the idea of having a much more chill work environment, likely being unionized, and just turning the crank to help out citizens navigate their city's bureaucracy sounds really nice at times. https://www.nyc.gov/content/pitcrew/pages/

RE: https://masto.yttrx.com/@waffles/116857223818269151 I’m going to leave signups open over the weekend, and hope that users liberally report any spam that they see. While I don’t love the idea of pushing the burden of moderation onto fediverse users, i honestly can’t keep an eye on the instance 24/7 and knowing that i’m backed by a series of (my own bots) that auto suspend shady accounts whenever a report comes in really helps me to sleep at night and not worry about yttrx getting defederated...

A bunch of instances are being scraped -- Ive been playing whack-a-mole by blocking CIDR ranges, UAs, etc. The bots are now coming from single IPs / scrape, which makes it a lot harder to stop. I just patched my version of mastodon to require authentication for the HTML view of the tags URI, which was the path that the abusers are taking. if they pivot to the federated API, it'll be a lot harder to stop. https://waffles.yttrx.com/posts/gate-hashtag-page-behind-auth/ #MastoAdmin

today’s been a super productive day, and it was a day that i took off from work. walked to the coffee shop while ming slept updated the yttrx spam catcher (it’s really coming along) migrated from barebones git to gitea for my homelab - initially done so that i could view git changes in a prettier way that “tig log” but now thinking its also a good place to maybe share some repos setup some stereo equipment and listened to some great (physical media) music about to shower & more coffee!
