  I used to have a children's anthology of #SciFi #ShortStories with one about how everyone was getting on the last ship to New Earth and the girl was running to her grandfather's house to convince him to come but he's planting flowers anyway, they miss the last ship and she's crying and he says, "This is New Earth. They took the old one with them. " I've been thinking about this story for like 40 years. Wish I knew who wrote it.

  A fun thing about using a battery/inverter system is being VERY aware of power efficiency. Mine has multiple USB and USB-C outlets (with PD) and that is by far the most efficient way to use it. If you have to turn on the power inverter to run things from the AC outlet, you lose a lot in the conversion process. This is especially silly since most of those things are wall warts converting it right back to DC. Result: I heavily favor buying things which can run off 12VDC or USB. #solar #battery

  My wife and firstborn are going overseas for a church mission trip for 10 days, where they will help build a home for a local church. This means 15yo mini-me and I have the house to ourselves. Plans: - label the power breaker box - wire the house for CAT6 - set up the rain barrels - put shelving up basically everywhere - watch so many movies - have no drama

  I have been somewhat productive today. Went for a walk, read a home improvement book about flooring, repaired a screen door, found and installed screens on a few other strategic places, and installed a window fan so our living room CO2 has dropped from 1020ppm to 684ppm in the last half hour. Air in the whole house feels much better.

  After church this morning, I was home solo for a bit so I played bass a while then drove an hour to band rehearsal where I, well, played more bass for about 2.5 hours and then Tony's church was without a bass player for their evening services so I was invited to sit in so I played more bass, like 8 or 10 songs that I'd never heard or seen before based only on my ear and some really dodgy chord charts and it turned out fine Anyway, I got to play lots of bass. It was a good day...

  Drove an hour to Fort Campbell this morning to get IDs for the kids so they may access mil resources, primarily our health care. I'd not been on a big Army post since retiring in late 2024, only the local Guard armory to get my own retired ID a year and a half ago. I got saluted by the gate guard. Don't like that at all. (Returned it because that's what you do. My issues ain't his fault.) I like life much better with the military not involved. I'm glad...

  Day whatever this is update in the new house - Washer and dryer are installed - door frame partially removed to get dryer in the room, has been rebuilt - lawn finally mowed - biggest weeds pulled - server and printer setup in a temp location - our bed frame is assembled - a bunch of boxes have been moved many times We are all so tired. I feel like my battery is starting the day at no more than 60% charge, so the afternoons and evenings are punishing. But we are making progress.

  Day I dunno 4 in the new house: Woke up, poured coffee, played guitar in my office, poured more coffee and am now sitting on the back patio in the sunshine reading a book about raising chickens while the wild birds make a great deal of charming noise. So much work to do later, but worth it.
