Also featuring Patrick Kettner, Meggin Kearney, Jory Burson, Chris Mills, Kadir Topal, @dontcallmeDOM, and chaired by the inimitable Ali Spivak. Great group of people helping to guide development of MDN as a cross-browser resources for web developers. Today is a big day. The Ethical Web Principles has been published as a W3C Statement, meaning it’s now fully endorsed by the W3C. More info here: https://www.w3.org/news/2024/ethical-web-principles-is-a-w3c-statement/ #EthicalWebPrinciples These principles already have started to influence the development of web specifications percolating through the W3C, both directly and via other guidelines docs like the Design Principles and Privacy Principles. A web browser should *NEVER* be able to look inside your clipboard without an explicit user action (such as ctrl-v). Honestly, this should not be a controversial statement. Microsoft Edge is one of the browsers that ships this dangerous capability. Here is the dialog you need to hunt for to turn this API off.

Images from the Sanrio exhibit I managed to see in Tokyo, "The Beginning of Kawaii." I especially like the "Happy Something" lunch box! This exhibit runs until June at the Mori Arts Center Gallery. (Bonus: you get a great view from the 52nd floor of the Mori tower in Roppongi.) https://macg.roppongihills.com/en/exhibitions/sanrio-final-ex/

For the avoidance of doubt: nothing changes. MAGA is still a hate cult. Climate change is still real. Earth is still round. Vaccines are still effective. Trans and non-binary people are valid. Women are people. Black lives matter. Love is love. No person is illegal. Hold your ground. Double down.

My ride for the next 11 hours is here. Next stop, Shanghai. On Sunday I’ll be taking the high speed train to Hangzhou for W3C’s Advisory Committee meeting – and our @ab face-to-face.

I made it to Shanghai. Entering China without needing to get a visa first feels like a super power. Currently standing around waiting for the airport maglev to open. I could just take the metro but … maglev!

State of the Browser kicking off in London and I’ve already seen so many lovely web people I know. The room is packed and it's also great to see how many hands went up when @dletorey asked “who is here for the first time?” #stateofthebrowser

Learning about WebViews at the #FOSDEM Browsers & Web Platform dev room, including the https://caniwebview.com site that (much like CanIUse) tells developers which features are available in which webviews – using BCD data maintained by @openwebdocs (which was presented earlier by @patrickbrosset).

In other news, the UN recently released a new report on “Making technical standards work for humanity - New pathways for incorporating international human rights into standards development for digital technologies”. Part of the intro to the report notes how the “W3C has published a statement on Ethical Web Principles that [...] puts internationally recognized human rights at the core of the web platform” which is work I drove, and words I wrote. 😊 https://www.ohchr.org/en/documents/tools-and-re...
