This is some brilliant writing. "Adams and Elon Musk occasionally talked about each other - usually to defend one another against media criticism of their respective racist rants - but I don’t know if they ever met. ... One, the world’s greatest humorist, who more than anything in the world wanted to succeed in business. The other, the world’s greatest businessman, who more than anything else wants people to think that he’s funny." https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/the-dilbert-...

One thing that comes with aging the ability to say "oh we've done this before" - anyone around in the early aughts remembers the breathless reporting of Zuckerberg as a genius wunderkind. Roll back to the 90s and it was Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. Same thing, new guy. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/sam-altman-artificial-intelligence-openai-profile.html

Observation: I've been a big Substack Notes user but it gets completely overrun by anonymous reply guys during news events. It's the old twitter egg problem. How does a network like the forkiverse deal with this? I have nothing against people with dumb opinions but I have a lot against *anons* with dumb opinions

Guess I made the right decision to migrate my blog (foiagras.com) off of substack. good riddance. https://www.theguardian.com/media/2026/feb/07/revealed-how-substack-makes-money-from-hosting-nazi-newsletters

While I'm shitting on Substack - I used to really love that platform (in the same way I really loved Twitter back in the day). You can never under-estimate the ability of site owners to lose control of the platform when bad actors (nazis, right wing trolls, etc) show up an expedite enshittification I believe Substack leadership wants to do the right thing, but they don't see the problems and I don't think they're very smart I worked at facebook back in the day...

Never underestimate stupidity. I worked at facebook when the Cambridge Analytica leak happened. We had NO CLUE the degree to which apps were scraping user data. I think we broadly knew it was going on but like, we didn't bother to look too deeply. The $$$ was too good This is kind of a curse that happens to a lot of tech platforms when you get big - you can't watch everything anymore, and shitty people exploit things. Right wingers are very good at figuring out and exploiting t...

I posted my main complaints about Substack on this post: https://beta.foiagras.com/p/foia-gras-20 I am a pretty die hard free speech guy and even if they want to entertain detestable speech on their platform - whatever. I draw the line when they start sending unsolicited nazi content to my readers, though. None of them signed up for that shit. I complained to Substack about this and was basically told "your readers are adults, grow up" - fine, man. I'm out
