My job is demanding I become an AI expert despite my (unvoiced) concerns so I've been exploring tools that don't give money and power to unethical corporations. Last night I got OpenCode (open source Claude Code) working with Llama.cpp (local LLM server) and OmniCoder (open source model). It feels like rolling my own cigarettes instead of smoking Marlboros.

My heart goes out to all of you who got a Slack message at 7am today from the CEO full of April Fools ideas.

I woke up with an idea for a tech startup that doesn't make me feel gross. I haven't felt that in a long time.

Overheard on the ferry this morning. "We use AI to catch bugs. It's transforming software development." "Yeah, we use AI to create the bugs in the first place. My daughter is playing Cassius in Shakespeare's Julius Caeser, prompting my FIL to say, "Oh, one of the bad guys!" She said no, he's the protagonist. He hatches the conspiracy to kill Caeser to save Rome. Then a few days later told me, "Since it's historical I guess everyone thinks they're the hero." Still relevant, centuries later.

I asked Claude to list 7 ways I should transform my company using AI. It did so enthusiastically. Then I asked to link to research supporting its suggestions. It did, with caveats that most studies show a productivity boost of <40% as a best case scenario, sometimes a 20% reduction, that those boosts tend to decay over six months due to reduced maintainability, and there are no studies showing impact on bottom line. It felt like I was in the Beckham Be Honest meme.
