  Just set up backups for my ejabberd server. I think. All I need to do is take a postgres db dump and back up the file contents of /var/lib/ejabberd/upload, right? #xmpp #ejabberd

  If you want an idea of how the economy's doing, my wife and are going out to dinner to celebrate that we got cold feet at the same time and decided NOT to buy a house. Even though we found one that we really like and ostensibly could afford. Everything that's going on in the world makes it feel too risky to gamble our life savings when it feels like a major collapse is right around the corner.

  So I set up a XMPP server in my homelab this weekend to see how the ecosystem has evolved since the last time I used it. Only took me a few hours. It seems like it has pretty much everything we'd expect from IM these days? E2EE with forward secrecy, group chats, message archives, reactions, file uploads, audio messages, voice and video calling, location sharing, etc. etc. It's even federated! Why are we sleeping on this tech? Is there some unmitigated downside I haven't...

  A fascinating thing about being on the inside of a software company that wanted to become "AI Native" is that I get to watch the bubble pop from the inside.
