Speckled Park cows and their calves chilling in the woods. The Speckled Park breed originated in Saskatchewan and is growing in popularity in Ireland, the UK and Australia due to its docility, ease of calving and ability to thrive on less nourishing vegetation. Ironically the population is so low in its native Canada the breed is now endangered there.

I get the feeling the real target of Jackboot Jim O'Callaghan's campaign isn't the solicitors but the recipients of free legal aid.

Sun spurge. One of the few plants with green (yellow-green) flowers. If she wants to wear green flowers she should wear them. You go, girl. Sun spurge is poisonous when eaten raw. The sap is caustic and is sometimes used to treat warts. Fun fact: Sun spurge is also known as Madwoman's Milk.

Every now and again a commentator twigs that when Trump calls for NATO members to increase defence spending he means "buy more stuff from the US arms makers *only* so I get a cut". Then it gets forgotten and the commentator goes back to hand wringing over NATO defence capabilities. And weeks pass before another commentator has that eureka moment. And rinse and repeat.

Holding a hare in confinement is cruel in itself. Handling a hare or any wild animal is cruel. This is why wildlife rescue centres do everything in their power to minimise human contact and length of stay in rehab. The hares have already been terrorised before the coursing event begins. This is being missed in the debate. https://www.rte.ie/news/politics/2026/0630/1581157-hare-coursing/

"Irish-founded start-ups like Stripe and Havok moved to the US to grow..." writes none other than John FitzGerald. Stripe was founded in the US. It did not have a presence in Ireland until three years later. Havok didn't move, it expanded. And its move into Japan was arguably more important than into the US.

Today I learned the word 'stirk', meaning yearling bull or bullock. Less commonly a young heifer. Usage seems to be confined to Scotland, Norn Iron and parts of England. Old English stirc, perhaps from stēor + -oc, -oc meaning small or young. America stuck with stēor and got steer. We prepended the -oc with bull to get bullock.
