Remember when I said my DR setup should have me back up in 20-30 minutes? Yeah. About that. Turns out a backup job can run clean every single night for months and still not actually be backing up what you think it is. So here's what I actually found out the hard way replacing nixos2's dying hardware. Feel free to cue the old "The more you know" clip. https://blog.ppb1701.com/best-laid-plans-replacing-nixos2s-failing-hardware-part-19-of-building-a-resilient-home-server-serie...

Been away a bit (nixos2 drama, more about that soon), but the Paramount-Warner Bros. saga kept moving without me: EU cleared it with conditions, then Paramount agreed to freeze the whole deal until a trial happens — maybe not until June 2027. Both sides are calling it a win. Let's see why. https://blog.ppb1701.com/deep-freeze #streaming #paramount #warnerbros #antitrust #consolidation #streamingwars #mediaconsolidation #blog

Bitwarden shipped a client update that requires Vaultwarden 1.37.0 — which also happens to close 8 medium-severity security advisories that don't even have CVEs assigned yet. Nixpkgs hasn't caught up. Stable currently points to 1.36.0. So I spent some time (unplanned) patching my server before the apps auto updated and relegated me to server website only. https://blog.ppb1701.com/when-bitwarden-breaks-vaultwarden-before-nixpkgs-catches-up-part-18-of-building-a-resilient-home #blog #...

Google and Meta both shipped facial recognition this week, days apart, for two different stated reasons — account recovery, catching AI catfish. Anyone popped the case off to access fans, ram, or ssd on a Minisforum em780? Mine's fans are making the dying hum to banshee scream. (using it as one of my homeservers) Trying to figure out how not seeing spots that really look like laptop pop points and only screws I saw when inside the "outer" case? #minisforum #em780 #selfhosting #minipc

Back in April I wrote about the gap between what "Hide My Email" implies and what it actually promises. Now we have a court case. Apparently Apple knew about a Hide My Email flaw for over a year, said it was fixed when it wasn't, and kept selling the feature the whole time. https://blog.ppb1701.com/the-word-hide-is-now-a-legal-question #apple #privacy #hidemyemail #classaction #bigtech #userhostile #icloud #blog

RE: https://flipboard.com/@kotaku/culture-ofp4l3m8z/-/a-DpBb0K6SQ3ilc2khVRTR4Q%3Aa%3A1938881949-%2F0 The problem is also likely at this point they have the design and probably some internal early ps6 models done...likely with no drive. Given I think them and MS had originally wanted to launch them maybe this year.

The DOJ cleared Paramount-WBD with zero conditions in June. Turns out career staff wanted to sue and got overruled before they could say so. Now 12 states just sued anyway — and Oregon wants to know if Paramount helped write the DOJ's own clearance letter. https://blog.ppb1701.com/the-other-states-have-entered-the-chat #streaming #paramount #warnerbros #consolidation #streamingwars #mediaconsolidation #antitrust #blog

Meta announced a fix so your smart glasses can't be secretly used to record people. Same week, it's testing "always-on" glasses that record everyone, all the time, and may not even light the warning LED. Same week, Instagram opted your public photos into AI image generation by default. 🤔 https://blog.ppb1701.com/always-on-always-watching #meta #google #ai #aiglasses #smartglasses #privacy #bigtech #surveillance #userhostile #blog

Xbox cut 3,200 jobs and divested five studios this week. Some are calling it bad luck, but it's not really— it's the bill for five years of buying studios it couldn't fund, cancelling exclusives, and giving away the ones that worked. And it just handed Sony a blank check on ending discs too. https://blog.ppb1701.com/xbox-didnt-get-unlucky-it-got-managed-this-way #xbox #gaming #microsoft #layoffs #gamepass #activisionblizzard #sony #playstation #digitalownership #bigtech #insertcoin...

Human-in-the-loop sounds like a safety net. It isn't. It's alarm fatigue in an understaffed ER, a driver watching a crash the car was supposed to handle, and a dev stamping a 30-file diff because it builds. Same failure, every time. https://blog.ppb1701.com/smaller-batches-sharper-eyes #ai #bigtech #blog #automation #codereview #humanfactors #amazon #selfdriving #softwareengineering

RE: https://mastodon.online/@9to5Mac/116555858426332207 aside from it always seemed flaky to me on the phone anyway....I'd argue a third. The most logical spot would be with the screen. Now I'm not sure how much that could maintain the screen around that for screen use, but it would also be adding a point of leaving fingerprints, oils, and smudges on the screen. Yes I know it's a touchscreen and can get some....but really, how many people try to do much more with it that...

So on Friday, the FCC quietly extended the foreign router firmware deadline to 2029. Why you may ask? Well the said that enforcing it would create cybersecurity risks. I mean imagine that, unpatched hardware might be an issue....who knew? 🤷♂️ The new deadline lands 20 days before the next inauguration. OpenAI's CFO went to the Wall Street Journal during trial recess. Two sets of revenue numbers. Two sets of spending commitments. A joint denial that made things worse. Musk's lawyers read the Journal. Altman still has to testify. OpenAI's CEO and president both held personal stakes in a chip company they then signed a $10 billion deal with. Neither disclosed it. Ever. Confirmed under oath. The CFO went to the Journal. Two sets of numbers. California AG watching. Eight banks holding a $40 billion unsecured loan with one repayment path. Musk stumbled into being accidentally correct. “Privacy. That’s iPhone.” — and Other Things That Need an Asterisk Apple isn’t lying about privacy. They’re just very careful about what they don’t say out loud. The Google deal. iCloud’s 5GB trap. The Meta silence. What “we keep your data safe” actually means. None of it required a lie.
