Proton built their entire brand on one promise: Swiss law means government agencies can't touch your data. Their own Terms of Service, their own infrastructure contracts, and a federal court case from March say otherwise. https://blog.ppb1701.com/not-even-government-agencies #bigtech #blog #infosec #privacy #proton #protonmeet #security #surveillance #userhostile #selfhosting

@ppb1701@ppb.social I give it 2-3 days before the Proton Groupies come in here and claim we're all wrong for warning people about Proton. I don't understand why people "simp" for a corporation. It makes no sense to me. But they do. #Proton #ProtonMail #ProtonVPN #ProtonPass #ProtonDrive

@ppb1701@ppb.social @relay@relay.infosec.exchange No. The foundational promise is no knowledge encryption. They’ve been very clear about the limitations of Swiss law from day one.

@ppb1701 Article raises some good points, but one is pretty bad. Yes ICANN controls the .com tld, but they control literally every domain, they ultimately decide which top level domains exist and where they go. If you want a domain name, you can not avoid ICANN. Which is also not a particularly big problem, yes it is headquartered in the US, but the governence is quite well spread out.

  • @ppb1701 very good post. It feels like some weird fanboy-ism is ruining everything on the ol' internet these days, particularly the discourse around privacy and security. I'm just not sure what people think these businesses have done to earn their loyalty in the face of valid criticism.

@ppb1701 This was obvious in 2015 when I tried setting up a cloud-based document management company in Switzerland. It just takes a bit of security due diligence and honesty.
