@ppb1701 Article raises some good points, but one is pretty bad. Yes ICANN controls the .com tld, but they control literally every domain, they ultimately decide which top level domains exist and where they go. If you want a domain name, you can not avoid ICANN. Which is also not a particularly big problem, yes it is headquartered in the US, but the governence is quite well spread out.
