Good morning from Chiloquin, OR, USA. This is the first full day of my 2026 music retreat, a 10 day, 1,800 mile solo road trip that includes stops at Crater Lake and Mt Hood plus performances at a street band festival next week in Seattle (https://honkfestwest.org/). I’ve packed a wide variety of instruments, from alto sax to my homebrew modular synth. I plan on spending my days outdoors, focusing on being present. At night the travel trailer becomes a mobile studio where I compose and record.

Greetings from Union Peak (7,698’). Not the tallest mountain in Crater Lake National Park, but the views are spectacular.

I wonder if the people who opened the Indian diner in Madras, Oregon had certain expectations

A local recommended the Ramona Falls trail, so I hiked that 7-mile out-and-back route yesterday morning. Sincere thanks to whomever constructed this river crossing. Didn’t even have to get my feet wet! On the return, I noticed something blue hanging from a tree. On inspection, it was a used ( #1) adult diaper. There’s no shame in incontinence, but there is great shame in littering. I used a stick to carry it two miles back to the trailhead, and rewarded myself with Trail Steward Gold Star.

Hiked McNeil Point Trail (https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/oregon/mcneil-point-trail) yesterday, and wow what a way to close out my time at Mt Hood. 9.3 miles, over 3,000 feet of elevation gain, but absolutely stunning views of the mountain. I hiker I met early on advised me to take the alternate ridge path on the way up, and I’m glad I did.

Please welcome our new MontereyBay.social admin, @harrison! Harrison has many years of software engineering and infrastructure experience, and is local to the #Monterey area. He is familiar with Mastodon, having run an instance for a group of friends. Best of all, he volunteered! 😁 With Harrison on the admin team, members will be able to safely move to a new instance should anything happen to me. It also brings us into compliance with the Mastodon Server Covenant, a long-time goal for me.

@schwa When I asked my solar installer (Allterra) about adding capacity, they told me that any changes to the system that is connected to the grid would result in us losing NEM. Their recommendation was a completely separate system that was not on the grid. 🤷

@harrison Couple of admin questions: 1. do you want a harrison@montereybay.social email address? 2. do you want to be cc’d on the Mastodon emails (trends, reports, new users)? Both are totally optional and we can set this up any time if your answer is “maybe later”.

The #NoKings march in #SantaCruz today was so positive and energizing. Heather said this morning that today is “political Halloween”, and I got into the spirit by dressing as The Dude with a sign that read “This Aggression Will Not Stand, Man.” We brought Kali in her An-teef-a wagon, and she was the biggest hit. Even in our lefty town, it’s great to be reminded that your neighbors are just as disgusted by the US administration as we are.

The Red Ball at the corner of Front and Cooper Streets in #SantaCruz is getting a makeover. This sculpture reflects the logo of the Museum of Art and History, and been the same shade of red since it was installed. At first, I was kind of offended by the paint job. I talked to the artists, who told me it was for the World Cup, and I thought, “meh, corporate branding.” He then said, “I’ve seen this sculpture my whole life and I can’t believe I’m getting to paint it,” so I say “go for it!”
