Anybody here from #SoCal remember a police killing from ~ 9-12 years ago? At the time it was covered in Long Beach or Orange Co newspapers but not nationally. Father out walking at a school predawn with his children, police challenge him, he panics and tries to drive away with children, shot by police who say they thought he was a kidnapper, children in custody for 12 hours, mother pregnant with third child. Man was military.

Awkward. Acquaintance asked for comments on a MS I previously reviewed anonymously, praising general project but making specific suggestions for improvement. Apparently was rejected despite my fairly positive review? This version is the same as the one I previously reviewed, has not taken my suggestions . . Should I tell them? Just re-send my prior comments? Pretend to make the comments anew? #academicchatter

@philipncohen That is the way I&#39;m now leaning. It is pretty interesting to see the bimodal recommendations. My review was in no way hostile, it was positive about the project and the suggestions were mostly about presentation. I&#39;m actually surprised at the implication that the paper was rejected because I thought it was quite good.

@jordinn@zirk.us It is not my research area, but as a progressive Christian (UCC) myself, I somewhat follow the sociological studies of progressive Christianity, of which there are quite a few, as well as (of course) of conservative groups. It happens that I knew Nancy Ammerman back in the 1970s, when she was doing her master&#39;s degree at the University of Louisville where I was an assistant professor, before both of us moved on to other things. 1/2

@jordinn@zirk.us Because my field is social movements, I am mostly aware of research on faith-based community action organizations. And having been in and around congregational leadership during COVID, I know that many churches are falling apart right now. And my collaborator on the Black protest project, Chaeyoon Lim, looks at religion and civic participation. I&#39;m not in it, but there is definitely a lively group of sociologists studying religion across the spectrum. 2/2

@rspfau @philipncohen In general, I do try to be not a jerk in reviews. Sometimes it takes significant work to tone down my outrage or sarcasm something that seems just bad. That emotional labor in reviewing is often the hardest part.

#academicchatter #sociology I found an error in a data table in a published article that uses public data in a top journal. Wrote to author, they confirm it is an error, they got data from more senior scholars who have not responded to them regarding error query. Not clear whether or how much it affects the substance of the findings. A junior scholar is getting findings with different data that contradict that article. Should likely error in 1st article be discussed in the new paper?
