It pisses me off that “open weights” are conflated with open source. There’s nothing open about a multi-gigabyte binary the building blocks of which are kept secret. Downloadable but opaque binaries are not open source - and Microsoft knows this full well. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/corporate-responsibility/topics/open-weight/

RE: https://mastodon.social/@hanse_mina/116962048294264583 Two things are clear: 1. Ukraine is consistent about their position that Wildberries is a military supplier and is treated as such. 2. Those logistics centers don’t have adequate fire suppression even for civilian facilities standard.

It seems to me that France did not ban social media from teens, rather than give commercial social media the opportunity to mandate collection of digital identity for every French person. Meta will be thrilled to get at this data - likely X, TikTok, Snap and Google, too. https://www.france24.com/en/french-parliament-backs-social-media-ban-for-under-15s-in-eu-first

Two years for Zalushnyi, who was blamed for the failed 2023 counteroffensive and clashed with Zelenskyi on military recruitment and use of media. Two and a half for Syrskyi, who would have continued if not for Zelenskyi’s ill-judged dismissal of Fedorov leading to public escalation. Two years for Drapatyi? If he’s successful, he will become too popular. If he’s not, the war will grind on. #Ukraine #foreignperspective

RE: https://flipboard.social/@TechDesk/116937776340521574 You know, there can be laws against this kind of stuff. Like, the European GDPR exists exactly to ban non-consented collection of personal data. Contrary to popular belief, it's not a law about installing cookie banners on websites.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@bkastl/116702515898083374 Don't forget that SpaceX was profitable with the Falcon 9 launches until they started the boondoggle of building "the world's largest reusable rocket", before Elon force-merged xAI and Twitter to SpaceX. Just the launch business was a fine business. Starlink is somewhat dubious given the satellite replacement cost never mind the ethics of losing view into the stars, but that was still on the fence. This SpaceX, though? St...

I'm just gonna put this out here again: changing #Bridgy Fed opt-in policy would increase its ability to bridge people over, without hurting anyone's privacy. 1. If you reply or react to a post from the other network, a stub profile should be created with that action shared. 1/4

This BYD sodium-ion battery is able to substitute an EPR nuclear reactor's entire power for over 6 continuous hours - and while nuclear is also dispatchable to a degree, a battery is infinitely more so. Oh, and it apparently will be available for less than a thousandth of the cost of an EPR nuclear power station. Sure, you gotta build the solar and wind farms too. https://electrek.co/2026/07/10/byd-masdar-11-gwh-rtc-storage-abu-dhabi/

Nordstream is a "mystery", in that the people who are most in the position to clear what happened, are the least interested in publicly discussing it. So convenient explanations get all the air time. @anderspuck@mastodon.social asks some of the less convenient questions. https://muku.dk/w/rhFeixKjy3HyV98yBNegZE

RE: https://social.coop/@ZaneSelvans/116887530869163608 I often say that ultra-endurance cycling is the craziest sport on the planet. But I'm wrong - ultra-endurance rowing takes the cake. Props to Kelsey Pfendler for being the fastest human to row halfway across the Pacific.

RE: https://eupolicy.social/@johnnyryan/116879658215133779 There is no coincidence in ChatControl being back on EU Parliament agenda today. It's Ireland in chair of Council of EU and Roberta Metsola in chair of Parliament colluding for US Big Tech, against Europeans, utterly indifferent to children welfare.

USA used to believe that private enterprise is a religion and the State owning any piece of a business is Communism. They also still claim to fight Communism, a system which died a deserved death decades ago. But now USA owns a growing share of American business. https://moeonmargin.substack.com/p/the-us-government-is-now-a-shareholder

What's this "window of opportunity"? Sure, Ukraine is putting russia on the defensive, but just as much of the country and its population are living under occupation, just as many are serving on the frontline. How could a free election be held this autumn, when it could not have been held before this autumn? https://www.kyivpost.com/post/79353 #Ukraine

UN Beyond GDP expert group published a paper proposing 31(!) indicators to replace GDP. My take: way too complex, GDP is used because it is one metric, not 31. That said, at least half of these are something else than a population (edit) mean (average) metrics. https://unctad.org/publication/counting-what-counts-compass-progress-people-and-planet
