This coke is "human made", what kind of joke is this? I was literally talking to someone about how people are tired of technology and looking for more human contact etc when someone brought these coke cans that all said "human made" on them like the cans are delivering the punch line. And it is funny. Not only because it conjures up a mental image of workers in a Coca Cola factory hand-pressing coca leaves into a large tank of Coca Cola or something. The sheer bluntness of...

Some people I follow post about electronics and the topic is really fascinating to me. I have these two remote control for air conditioners from the attached picture, and of course they don't work just by putting batteries in. So I thought why not give it a try to repair them? Perhaps some fedi-people can give me pointers and we can have fun talking electronics. (Better than asking you-know-who, right?) If you'll humor me, I'll outline my newbie approach below. The beige one on the...

Something I always found remarkable about Fahrenheit 451 is how it explicitly says the book-burning situation didn't come about due to a dictatorship or similar, but "bottom-up" because the people lost interest in books. Here's a quote: "It didn't come from the Government down. There was no dictum, no declaration, no censorship, to start with, no! Technology, mass exploitation, and minority pressure carried the trick, thank God." According to Wikipedia it seems Ra...

What is it about games that makes me not want to read a lot of text in them? I can lie or sit down with a book for hours, so I'm definitely fine with reading a lot of text. But the idea of reading the same book on a monitor, at a desk, is a lot less enticing. Even if I could lie down comfortably and have a big TV to read on, I don't think reading a book on that screen would be a lot of fun. So it seems like the body position itself is already a big part of it. But then even if I imagi...

Recently I stumbled upon Marginalia search: https://marginalia-search.com/ It’s a search engine that prioritizes non-commercial content. As a seasoned internet user you can probably guess what you’ll get on google if you search “free games”: Net casinos, p2w games, the epic store etc. Its a notoriously shady term. On Marginalia, what I got were blog posts of people listing free games they thought were actually worth playing, and the like. Amazing! This opens the door for broad topic searches...

Is this just my perception or have people largely stopped using the term "retro gaming", or categorizing games as retro games? I feel like there was a time when people were into retro games, but nowadays retro aesthetics and mechanics have mixed into current games without being labeled like that. There might be pixel or PS1 style low poly graphics in current games no matter their mechanics and it's more about the appeal of minimalistic looks that focus on the essential. I'm n...

Can someone recommend a nice #gaming #podcast to me? Looking for something that’s less “news” and “I played game x” and more… I guess insightful? An unusual angle?
