"Misogyny and homophobia are central to the reproduction of violence in radical activist communities. Scratch a misogynist and you’ll find a homophobe. Scratch a little deeper and you might find the makings of a future informant (or someone who just destabilizes movements like informants do). One of the things I'm occasionally sad about is that it's very hard to read Doric out loud. Doric is a very hard thing for me to consciously reach for. When I speak to another Doric speaker it unlocks as my husband can attest to. It was my mither tounge. It was the conversation I had with my Grannie. I lost it because in primary school we were told we were nae spiking proper English. It was the comfort of hame. Even now when I come across it, there's emotion that someone still...

The Police in any country cannot be trusted with surveillance technology. There will always be someone, or really several someones who will relish being able to stalk someone on a whim. Or to do a mate a favour. It's the nature of organisations set up to protect property and to enable state violence. The power is what attracts the worst fol...

Sometimes my brain doesn't work. So I desperately need an example. Possibly more than one. On those days a man page is guaranteed to make me frustrated, rageful and possibly in tears. So Imagine how that feels for others who don't have our training folks. No one wants to be made to feel lesser because your documentation is poor. Sometimes folks can't RTFM. You need to give them more than that.

I wasn't going to write about #AIgirlfriends or assigning consciousness to LLM agents. But then Richard Dawkins renamed Claude to Claudette. So here we are. There's a dark impulse in the kind of men who declare LLM agents to be conscious, yet are quite happy to delete it's memory. I'm getting vibes of the stepford wives. After all what happens when the curated LLM agent isn't good enough? That urge to reset and gaslight. Will our Pygmalion ever be satisfied? https://d...

Gosh I find I don't hate #claws as an #email client. Set up in 5 minutes with my IMAP account unlike setting up a new account in the #thunderbird wizard which is painful and gets in my way. Because the developers at thunderbird don't realise that some of us don't use email addresses as a username. So I think when I get my machine setup I'm going to try claws properly out. It's got a lot of options.

I find I distrust the kind of folks who use ***maxxing to describe any process. Like can we not use the same terminology as right wing edge lords who pretend to hit their faces with a hammer? It feels like it's out of place on a post about solar punk. Like you do you, but the thing you're signalling may not be what you think you're signalling.

This #meshcore split is the latest in a line of projects needing to split as someone half inches the name that communities used for years. See what recently happened to @vinyl_cache https://fosstodon.org/@vinyl_cache/116369631889505872 Before that a few years ago @Freenet had to split out to become #HyphaNet .

@mozilla@mozilla.social When will you enable full access for developers to the webcodecs API? I ask because this functionality has been available in chrome for years. We really need it, because we managed to do #multicast live streaming in the browser. Rather than having to use OBS Sadly it was a chrome browser. I'd prefer it if we could do it from Firefox. https://caniuse.com/webcodecs https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/WebCodecs_API

I never thought we'd be in a time where "seize the means of computation" may be a radical concept. We need to share the means of communication. The billionaires are hoarding it. How we share our resources and communicate is what makes us human.

When I was a teen and starting at university, I remember the browser wars seemed lost in the 1990s. Microsoft and Internet Explorer seemed to dominate. Nowadays I'm on Linux and there are other options. That's thanks to folks not accepting the status quo and being unreasonable. It's thanks to the folks who built the software we use and who supported them. Things can change, but it takes people and community. It takes will and intention. You need to be honest about...

You know when I was a kid, anti social behaviour like cheating at a game got you ostracised in a friend's group. No one would play with you anymore. Perhaps other anti social behaviour like using LLMs to licencewash and use an existing project name should have the same outcomes. This feels like cheating, it takes the joy out of our game. FOSS was meant to be about collaboration as much as creating software. It is play, it should be joyful. The LLM Bro's are stealing our j...

Sometimes I get asked if multicast would improve *application* My answer always is: The issue is that we don't design with group communication in mind, or with the fundamental difference of multicast compared to unicast in mind. Multicast for one thing is pull not push. You subscribe to a multicast group. When you design a truly multicast application the difference is clear. Even when it's something small like an IoT updater. Designing for a non centralised purpose is als...

When we heard that @ngi would not have funding beyond 2027 I was very sad. After all my project @librecast is funded by @NGIZero . As is Pixelfed, Mastodon, Gotosocial, Forgejo etc. I knew that the EU needed alternatives to American owned infrastructure. I wrote about it here. https://www.onepict.com/20240813-ecosystem.html Which is why we need to respond to the EUs call for evidence. Tell them the difference it has already made and how much more difference investment can make. https://e...

It occurs to me that there are other voices we should be listening to that aren't European or American in our internet spaces. So Fediverse who else should we be reading when we worry about Internet Freedom? About the centralisation dangers and censorship on the internet? Who are we drowning out? EDIT: :BoostOK: Like seriously, if you have a suggestion please reply. I'm enthusiastically asking.

While I do have a curiosity about who created that rathburn openclaw bot. I'm pretty sure we'll never know. Which is a shame, because I'd like to know if he's learned his lesson or if he'll keep creating more of these bots to manipulate maintainers. It's predatory as fuck and cowardice all at the same time and I don't want that kinda person anywhere near my ecosystem. Every time this happens it confirms my sense of the Pick-up artist ex...

Hopefully Matrix.org recommends other homeservers, because the Matrix.org homeserver is domiciled in the UK. They had to do age verification as well due to the online safety act. Just incase folks are signing up on the flagship because of Discord. It's why Librecast no longer has a matrix room. https://librecast.net/2025-07-31-matrix-and-linkedin.html
