Our food bin is full of maggots. I thought just closing the lid tight and ignoring it might help but I opened yesterday and it was full. Some online advice says wash with boiling water and bleach, but then it can’t go to the food waste recycling collection tomorrow, and instead I’ve got some bleachy rotting food waste soup. Others say collections expect maggots, don’t worry, let them take it then wash properly afterwards. Others say we should try to put it all inside a single food waste bag f...

“Everyone I met was part of one huge group: people working themselves to the bone who were getting screwed by billionaires and corporations—regardless of party or state or race or ethnicity. Regardless, even, of whether they are workers or the owners of farms or small businesses. Populism is not an indictment, but an opportunity.” Compelling long read via: @j12t https://j12t.social/@j12t/115478669505729365

This is a terrible idea that would likely backfire more than Palestine Action proscription. Yes the silence from people who are normally vocal about anti-racism over recent attacks on Jews in the UK is deafening. Yes this only helps the far right and Kahanists in Israel to claim ‘look no-where is safe for you, no-one cares, come here and fight for a safe home’. But banning marches against the actions of a country that’s killing journalists, rescue worker and medics, starving kids, flattening ho...

What the actual? Turns out #Farage didn't want to stand for election as MP in 2024, and changed his mind after being given £5m by the crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne. Which he didn't disclose..https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/apr/29/revealed-nigel-farage-was-given-undisclosed-5m-by-crypto-billionaire-in-2024

"Two Palestinians, including a 14-year-old schoolboy, have been killed in the occupied West Bank after Israeli settlers opened fire near a school amid mounting assaults on education in the territory… "The head of the local council told Reuters that Israeli settlers had entered the village and opened fire near a school – first at students, and later at others who arrived at the scene… "Footage from the scene seen by the Guardian shows a settler in military fatigues, w...

RE: https://mamot.fr/@pluralistic/116395778447572916 “people who see a severe degradation in the quality of the services they rely on switch their political affiliation to one of Britain's fascist parties – UKIP, the Brexit Party, or Reform – parties that have called for ethnic cleansing in Britain. “This is what has me scared. We can see the looming economic crises in our near future. If it's not the AI crash that triggers the next wave of austerity, it'll be the oil c...

Simple idea: Platforms with algorithmic timelines -a new category of legal entity perhaps- whose algorithms amplify rather than minimise misogynistic (and other hate) content should lose the right to operate in the UK until they fix it. It’s technically feasible, and legally and morally necessary. Why should the education system, not to mention these women teachers’ and kids’ future chance of happy relationships and lives be seen as a legitimate externality of these companies’ business models?...

You don’t need to be an advanced military strategist to realise that a regime fighting for survival against two countries leading a deeply unpopular invasion -who have elections this year, has nothing to lose from escalating. The rest of the world has little to do beyond keep out and decarbonise much much quicker. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/mar/21/iran-war-conflict-middle-east-trump-israel

Eran Hahn –who runs a helpline for male sexual abuse survivors– on one of the last taboos: “One of every three women and one of every five men undergo sexual abuse during their lifetime. That's a lot. —“We know that up to age 12, boys and girls are affected at equal rates.” “That's correct. Sexual abuse of men is very widespread, but the subject isn't talked about. It's silenced… “The fight or flight, or freeze, response is not gender-dependent. It happens to ev...

How many people know that #WordPress was co-founded by a black man, Mike Little? Or that he's from the north of England? A self-taught coder from #Stockport, just south of #Manchester? Or that he never received so much as a share, cent or job offer from the $7bn+ valued Automattic after spending five months working exclusively with Matt Mullenweg on the B2 fork? After @bevangelist@social.coop told me about @mikelittle@mastodon.online I interviewed him for a documentary I never got round to...

Office for Budget Irresponsibility has leaked the #budget early… "Fuel duty to be frozen until next September" "A new mileage tax on electric vehicles" Brilliant double whammy of first policies out the bag. Meanwhile in Norway –driven by tax incentives– EVs were 96% of car sales in June (https://mobilityportal.eu/norway-96-9-market-share-evs/) Ignoring the climate & PR idiocy of disincentivising EVs over petrol, I still don't get why Labour desperately chases Refor...
