The FontShop.com website is now officially closed. Once among the best font websites, it had mostly languished since being sold out to Monotype in 2014, but it’s still sad to see the final nail in its coffin. When I worked at MyFonts (also now owned by Monotype), FontShop was technically a competitor but it never felt that way: I rooted for their success because they were such a positive force in the industry. They even let me, a “competitor”, work from their office when in SF. End of an era.

A little under 4 hours from now, @19cWT is giving a talk on “Typographic Realia: Wood Type as Historical Objects” for the Newberry Library in Chicago. The talk is free and open to the public, both in person and streaming online. https://www.newberry.org/calendar/wing-lecture-spring-2024

I just saw @inga’s Zetkin fonts were updated to version 0.6 over at @futurefonts and the price is quite a steal for the size and usability of the family (especially because updates to future versions are free): https://www.futurefonts.xyz/inga-plonnigs/zetkin I used an earlier version of Zetkin for body text and subheads in the @Typographics design for 2021 (https://2021.typographics.com) and it was a pleasure to work with – a great balance of practicality and personality. I’m sure it’s even be...

It’s been a tough year so far but I really find joy in the community here on Mastodon and the larger Fediverse. There’s a satisfying DIY punk rock feeling to it all, as if I’m sticking it to dystopian billionaires every time I boost someone’s Mastodon post or fave someone’s Pixelfed image or try out some new Fedi app or follow some interesting stranger on some weird platform I’ve never heard of but can still interact with because it’s federated. It’s what the internet is supposed to feel like.

This is impressive: a fully responsive website template system based on Star Trek’s LCARS operating system, built with only HTML & CSS – no images. Made by Jim Robertus, based on the original designs by Michael Okuda. https://www.thelcars.com (Sound on for full experience.) via @stuarticus who used it to make a new RSS reader theme for @NetNewsWire 🤯

10 years ago today I published my article “Variable Fonts for Responsive Design” at A List Apart: https://alistapart.com/blog/post/variable-fonts-for-responsive-design/ I was very happy when, a year and a half later, the OpenType specification was updated to support variable fonts. Since then, I’ve spent a lot of time making and working with variable fonts, including building up the https://v-fonts.com directory (now sadly out of date). There have been bumps in the road, but it’s been satisfy...

Currently enjoying the 1849 wood type specimen book from Wells & Webb, courtesy of the @RITTigers digital collections: https://digitalcollections.rit.edu/luna/servlet/detail/RIT~1~1~909~8726 I especially love the 100 lines pica (i.e. 1200 pt) Condensed Roman specimen where they could only fit one letter across an entire spread. Kudos to RIT and the Cary Graphic Arts Collection for making such nice images and sharing them publicly.

@justvanrossum I guess the moral of the story is that using “production” to refer to the final product of making fonts is confusing to a lot of people (especially people who aren’t familiar with the use of “production” in other kinds of software development) and maybe should just be avoided altogether when formally referring to any stage of the process. I like “development” (to refer to the development stage) and “final” (to refer to the final output), but almost anything seems better than “...

If you hadn’t seen it already, the design and preliminary website for this year’s @Typographics festival launched recently. It will continue evolving over the coming weeks but the full list of conference speakers is already posted. https://2026.typographics.com My design for the branding and website this year was inspired by these construction barriers in the NYC subway. The fonts are Dual Casual (from @genramirez) and Owners (from @mckltype).

Today I learned @MonaApp allows you to pick custom-installed fonts for the interface of both their desktop and mobile apps. This has been possible for a while but I only learned about it working in the mobile app today. Naturally I’ve now changed the settings to show everything with fonts I made myself. (Shown here is @HEX Franklin.) If you want to do something like this too, you’ll have to use an app like iFont or AnyFont to install the fonts in iOS first (and maybe also restart your device).

In this interactive web demo, @gdc shows an alternate method for text justification, called “cogent” or “semi-justified” alignment, where each line is justified if possible within a range of spacing limits, but left-aligned otherwise: https://blog.glyphdrawing.club/semi-justified-text/ Fraser Muggeridge gave a great related talk at @ANRT this year, focused on an example from Herbert Bayer: https://vimeo.com/1059643515 (Unfortunately the video is cut off at the end.)
