Currently enjoying the 1849 wood type specimen book from Wells & Webb, courtesy of the @RITTigers digital collections: https://digitalcollections.rit.edu/luna/servlet/detail/RIT~1~1~909~8726 I especially love the 100 lines pica (i.e. 1200 pt) Condensed Roman specimen where they could only fit one letter across an entire spread. Kudos to RIT and the Cary Graphic Arts Collection for making such nice images and sharing them publicly.

… I love the idea of letterpress-printing something so big that the *borders* need to be 16 lines pica (i.e. 192 pt). https://digitalcollections.rit.edu/luna/servlet/detail/RIT~1~1~909~8726?page=89&qvq=lc:RIT~7~7,RIT~2~2,RIT~3~3,RIT~1~1&mi=89&trs=108

@nicksherman@typo.social @RITTigers@mastodon.social I wish we had the wood type vendors’ sales data. I would love to know how many people bought type that big.

@nicksherman@typo.social @RITTigers@mastodon.social Thanks for this — it’s just in time for a design info post I’m writing up for our forthcoming American Grotesk!
