  No matter what you think of AfD, it’s weird for the US president to publicly comment on a subnational election in Germany, and cheer for a party getting a plurality. The specifics—neo-Nazis, transnational fascist solidarity—make it extra bad. But it’s not normal, and shows where his priorities lie.   Destroying American landmarks and building monuments to himself is an abomination. Not the single worst thing, but emblematic of the whole problem. I feel this too. People have always cared about symbols, many care a lot about symbolism today, and there's virtually no national voice channeling that.   Samuel Alito is corrupt, accepting gifts from people with business before the court, and holding stocks directly impacted by cases he rules on.   So cruel. Unnecessary and cruel. And harms the community and country too. I’m having trouble finding the right words.   REMINDER: A main argument against US aid to Ukraine is the US badly needed to husband missiles and air-defense for the possibility of war with China. Then the US used that and more on war with Iran. And the supposed China hawks said nothing, confirming that they were Russia sympathizers all along.

  The Trump admin had a real theory of war: Put on a show of toughness, tell people how manly you are, disdain law, do war crimes, and you win. Earlier losses came from leaders too "weak" to do that.   One of the worst things about the Senate’s attempted Fauci show trial is how the supposed evidence against him is early in COVID he considered multiple hypotheses, then increasingly ruled some unlikely as evidence came in. The objection is he did science. Fundamentally that is what’s under attack.

  Iran still blocking Strait of Hormuz. A ship trying to run the strait this weekend hit a sea mine and blew up. US still blockading Iranian shipping. Houthi-Saudi escalation disrupting Red Sea exports. Ukraine hit more Russian oil facilities. Oil prices fell and stocks rose on the news.

  The Trolley Problem is a prevalent thought experiment because it features a real moral dilemma: Does action bear more responsibility for harmful outcomes than inaction? If the trolley’s heading to save lives and you flip the switch to make many die instead, there’s no problem. Obviously very wrong.   Under Trump/Hegseth, the US already went to war with the Houthis in Yemen. Started Mar 2025 with White House fanfare. Spent valuable munitions, lost a few jets, killed some people, failed to stop Houthi fire at ships in the Red Sea, lied about it, leaked plans on Signal, blustered more, then quit.

The implications for America’s geopolitical situation is much worse with attacking Iran than leaving Afghanistan. But going by tone of coverage, one would think the opposite.

He destabilized the situation, let Iran out of nuclear restrictions in exchange for nothing, killed an Iranian general—first time the US assassinated a top foreign military commander since WWII—but people called that anti-war or thought it didn't count.

  The Mitch McConnell hospital photo has me wondering: Do proof of life photos work anymore? You know, the sort where the person is holding a recent newspaper? Now it's easy to make a fake photo, and one with someone similarly sized holding the paper and a face swap might not be obvious.
