i feel like i should've heard before that a Reeve novel would give the female lead a female love interest but i guess you learn something new every day.

    robotgirls against peltier elements

been thinking about the differences between the stereotypical puppygirl, robot/dollgirl, etc. there's some interesting stuff in there. the robotgirl/dollgirl differs from the puppygirl and also the catgirl because it is by far the most likely to be a workaholic. There's a kind of competency and ability implied there that is pointedly absent in the stereotypical puppygirl.

Sam Vimes' arc in the Discworld book illustrates pretty well the weirdness of when somebody actually 'works' their way to the top of society like in his appearance in Monstrous Regiment (2003) the narration points out that he's the second most powerful man in Ankh-Morpork, sent on a diplomatic mission, and is frustrated that he can't just whack the warring countries on the head and throw them in a jail cell like he would if they were a couple people....

latter-stage Discworld Watch and Moist novels are weird because you basically see Lord Vetinari's weird future vision starting to come together. a system based entirely on powerful people bickering amongst themselves so they will never be able to challenge Vetinari himself. There's an implied goal where Vetinari croaks of old age and the guilds and rich men just continue bickering as normal, like he never left. A city that runs itself. It's like some sort of machiavell...

discworld, book 1: heehee look at this idiot bumbling around this wacky fantasy land, and this wizard who can't cast a single spell. they're so funny right! discworld, book 37: "I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs, a very endearing sight, I'm sure you'll agree. And even as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged onto a half submerged l...
