Sam Vimes' arc in the Discworld book illustrates pretty well the weirdness of when somebody actually 'works' their way to the top of society
like in his appearance in Monstrous Regiment (2003) the narration points out that he's the second most powerful man in Ankh-Morpork, sent on a diplomatic mission, and is frustrated that he can't just whack the warring countries on the head and throw them in a jail cell like he would if they were a couple people. It really illustrates his attitude, and also how he kind of grits his teeth in a desperate attempt not to let rising in society change him
