Just published a new Rust crate for type mapping using "type-by-example", including recursion. Turns out to be very useful for codegen! https://crates.io/crates/type-mapper

I finally got a Pi booting cleanly into a framebuffer-direct gstreamer setup which looks pretty slick while it boots. I even managed to write some Rust code to manage the gstreamer streams. The camera display is almost done! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDPTQ9VW_7c

I published the source for the Pi-based Unifi RTSP stream viewer on Github. It's using Rust to control a gstreamer pipeline that renders directly to the framebuffer at a pretty decent frame rate. Also added some goodies like image views, camera titles and a real-time clock. The Waveshare display looks pretty incredible. It's very bright and clear in-person. https://github.com/mmastrac/pi-frame

For kicks I rejected the terms of service on my LG tv post update and it warned me with scary language that nothing was going to work after it rebooted. Turned out that it was just fine? I guess it had a tantrum over being unable to legally spy on us.

I spent a few days on and off debugging why my gstreamer/RTSP camera screen was failing. It turned out to be that the Pi was falling back to 100mbit because of a network cable issue. That shouldn't cause issues with 3mbps camera streams by itself, buuuuuuut.... The cameras are running a UDP stream which generally works fine at gigabit speeds. It's just when the interface slowed down it choked! So why was it failing at 100mbit but not 1gbit? It turns out the upstream device cou...

I built a homelab monitor on top of Stylus and hooked it up to a cheap little 7" HDMI screen. It worked a lot better than expected. I love these glanceable displays that can give you a bunch of information in an instant The video walks through how to set it up and monitor some unifi & other devices https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LC3INaZVqFA

I saw my first definitive cosmic ray bug of my life today. My son signed into an app with Google, and I got the un-deliverable email notification where they tried to send it to ______<tr> instead of _____<tt>. Literally off by 0x02. Thanks, high-energy particles from space.

I started working on a little emulator for the VT420.

I had a very specific, very tech nerd nightmare the other night that the US would kick everyone else out of NANPA.

There's a point in every emulator's life where you've got enough emulated that you can actually start to see the whole thing working together. Say hello to Blaze, a VT420 emulator written in Rust!

I think this VT420 emulator might actually be going somewhere.
