I'm investigating the original Berkeley RISC-I CPU out of historical interest and wonder why some instructions use more than one opcode (e.g. LDHI uses 16 opcodes 0x70...0x7F). I can't see why this is necessary – is this an optimization or am I missing something here? Details seems to be provided in Corcoran, G.T., "Using ISPS to Specify the RISC I Architecture and Implementation," Master's Report, UCB (Dec. 1980), but I can't find this online. #risc #berkeley #ucb #c...

Admission requirements for the five-year integrated Computer Engineering degree programme at NTNU in Trondheim are being lowered for the fourth year in a row. Apparently, the uncertainty due to the AI craze is dampening young people's interest in the CE programme. #computerscience #CS #computerengineering #CE #NTNU #Trondheim https://www.universitetsavisa.no/arbeidslivsrelevans-fakultet-for-informasjonsteknologi-og-elektroteknikk-institutt-for-datateknologi-og-informatikk/poenggrensen-pa-d...

Farewell, Linux! "Linux is not one of those anti-AI projects, and if somebody has issues with that, they can do the open-source thing and fork it. The beautiful wooden keyboard of the Kawai MR25. There’s amazingly little dirt considering this piano was used on stage for decades… One of the five non working keys is fixed (simple adjustment, D#1), the others are next to each other (F1 to G#1) and are scanned using the same output pin of a 74LS138 3-to-8 decoder. So I guess either the output has failed or there’s a bad solder joint or cable. I need to bring a scope from the office tomorrow… #Kawai #e-piano #electronics #music

Computering! On RISC-V! 😀 (from the SpacemiT K3 technical overview) If geekbench results can be trusted, the 16-core K3 has twice the single-core score compared to our 64-core Milk-V Pioneer and about the same multi-core score. Radxa's O6N (12-core Aarch64) still has almost double the single/multicore score of the K3, so RISC-V still has to catch up quite a bit, but the K3 at least doesn't feel slow. https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/18559008 https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/14...

I upgraded a MacPro 2013 from 6 cores to a 12 core Xeon today. The old CPU had this strange defect (the reddish spot) on its heatspreader which had a similar looking counterpart on the copper heatsink. I never saw something like this before, does anyone know what this is? The CPU worked without problems. #intel #xeon #macpro #apple #defect

Does anyone have schematics or the service manual for a Kawai MR270 e-piano (built in the 1990s)? The user manual is easy to find, but any other information seems to be hard to come by. #music #piano #epiano #schematics #electronics

OpenBSD supports the 64-core RISC-V Milk-V Pioneer board since version 7.6. However, this is not mentioned on the riscv64 port page (https://www.openbsd.org/riscv64.html), there is no information on installing OpenBSD on the Pioneer in the INSTALL.riscv64 docs and there also seems to be no RISC-V-specific mailing list for OpenBSD. Does anyone have more information on running OpenBSD on this specific piece of hardware? https://www.openbsd.org/plus76.html #openbsd #riscv #milkv
