Hey, fedi. What smaller non-profits do you recommend for donations? Some beautiful people have been tipping me for my articles and my accessibility app. That gives me the warm fuzzies. But I’m going to donate those tips, because other folks need them more. And I’m going to replace my tips links with non-profit donation links. My current list: 1. Sogorea Te’ Land Trust 2. Audre Lorde Project 3. Equal Justice Initiative 4. STEM Like a Girl Who are your faves? #AskFedi #Donations #NonProfits...

August is Black Business Month. Here’s a great opportunity to support a Black-owned business… Do you use Goodreads? If so, you can migrate to @thestorygraph@bookstodon.thestorygraph.com. You can even import all of your Goodreads data. Nadia Odunayo is the founder and sole developer. Together with her small team, they’re making a great product that’s slowly improving over time. So go support Nadia and co. instead of a fascist billionaire. https://thestorygraph.com #BlackBusinessMonth #BlackM...

Life has been an emotional roller coaster this week. But let’s focus on today… 1. I made the best tofu scramble for my fam. I always make it good. But today it was bangin’. 2. Spent a good portion of the day with the dogs on my lap. 3. Almost finished my migration away from Trello (where they are making use of your data for AI training mandatory in a couple of weeks). #3GoodThings #ThreeGoodThings

Here’s something that will blow your mind. Most U.S. water systems have internet-based logic controllers. And a large number of them use NO PASSWORDS OR DEFAULT PASSWORDS. Yeah. Public water systems ready for the hacking. Which came to light because there are signs of attacks. Enough of them that CISA had to issue a warning to all water facilities, recommending they disconnect them or actually use a fucking password. CNN cites about 30 water systems were attacked this week, with six other stat...

In April, NASA turned off one of the few remaining functional instruments. They have been slowly disabling them since 1998, because of limited power/use at various ranges. Think about that for a moment… It launched almost 50 years ago, in 1977. And we are STILL able to communicate with it. Expectedly until 2036. And this with our technology knowledge at the time. Unless it collides with something or is retrieved, it will reach the Oort Cloud in about 300 years. It will take about 30k years to...

My son and me in a sensory room at an art exhibition. Three rooms, each with only a single-color of light (red, green, and blue) and atmospheric music representing its respective color. We immersed ourselves in every one of them. It was wild. #Art #Exhibition #Museum #Light #Music #Immersion

A couple of weeks ago, Napalm Death played a Tiny Desk concert at NPR. Yeah. I know. I can’t even imagine seeing them in a tiny little office space. Yet, there they were. There was even some slam dancing happening. And they slayed. Their set was perfect. What a day for metalheads on staff and the volunteer team. The Tiny Desk team is rad for having them. A brave ask, likely with some push-back. https://www.npr.org/2026/07/15/g-s1-133336/napalm-death-tiny-desk-concert #TinyDesk #NPR #NapalmD...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@BenRiceM/116980424345560765 This thread is, well, you’ll just have to read it. I didn’t know anything about the Ulm 5. It’s tragic. In short, five brave human being destroyed some Israeli weapon equipment. No harm to any humans. Just equipment. And they’re being treated like mass serial killers. Certainly with violations of human rights. All in the name of helping Palestinians (and beyond). If you do read through, you’ll probably want to research more. I will be d...

🚨 U.S. folks. There is one day left to comment on the FCC proposed rule to eradicate anonymity on all phone lines! If they pass this rule government ID, physical address, and alternative phone number will be required for every new phone line. Anonymous phone lines and burner phones will cease to exist. That means no connected privacy via cellular at protests. ** Please add your comment! ** For the first field (proceedings) use these two: 17-59 and 02-278 https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings/exp...

Original Death members Terry Butler and Rick Rozz are exhuming early Death songs in a band called “Left to Die.” “Initium Mortis” is a collection of demo tracks and others that didn’t make it onto “Scream Bloody Gore” and “Leprosy.” It’s so absolutely delightful. It’s uncanny how much Matt Harvey sounds like Chuck Schuldiner. His voice was like no other, and Harvey nails it. And drummer Gus Rios is true to the style of Bill Andrews. If you’re a fan of the band that started death metal, you’re...

My experience with Airtable support today (have to use it for a client)… 1. Our plan costs $24. Saw we were billed $119. 2. Sent a support request. 3. Human replied and said they couldn’t help. Instead I had to talk to their support robot. 🤦🏻‍♂️ 4. Fine. Followed the link and talked to the support robot. 5. I told the robot its human said it needed to give me a refund. And it did, without question. All $119 of it. Making this month free. Take that, company who forces me to resolve my disputes...

How many ways can we spell out fascist totalitarian dictatorship before American normies realize it’s happening? https://www.404media.co/leaked-document-shows-the-surveillance-tech-at-ices-fingertips There needs to be more ICE doxxing. These people need to be exposed and publicly berated. They should lose their friends and be ostracized by their families. A dictatorship can’t function unless it has subservient lackeys. If we reduce the pool of candidates through shame and humiliation, it redu...

This is a great list of tips for improving your Signal privacy from @yaelwrites@mastodon.social. I found this part especially meaningful: “Turning off biometrics makes it annoying to use your phone…If that’s you, remember that both Android and iOS have a quick lockout that forces a passcode and disables biometrics until you re-enter it: on iPhone, hold the side + volume button until the power-off screen appears, then cancel; on most Androids, hold power and tap Lockdown.” https://blog.yaelwri...

Today, Mullvad and their fascist co-owner Daniel Berntsson each published an excuse essay. Excuses for why supporting fascists is okay. J.K. Rowling is actively and aggressively using her wealth to attack Amnesty International. Specifically, she is trying to bankrupt them because they criticized anti-trans organizations. Let that sink in. 1. She’s not just anti-trans. She’s pro-violence against trans folks. Because, yes, anti-trans organizations invoke violence against trans folks. 2. She’s so committed to this that she's trying to bankrupt the largest human-rights organization on the planet. That’s nazi behavior. She’s...

Today something amazing happened… I was driving home, listening to a bangin' record, with the windows and sunroof down, and it was cloudy and cool outside. For like ten minutes I forgot about all the madness in the world, and my anxiety about my biopsy, and everything else. I was SO happy and hadn't even noticed for a minute. When I did, I forced myself to be completely present in that moment of bliss. Because it never happens. I forgot how that feels. I'm realizing how infrequent...

Some folks may have heard about 31-year-old Kelsey Pfendler’s mastery of the sea. What I find most impressive is that she shattered the records she broke. She rowed a boat from California to Hawaii ALONE. Her 2,400-mile journey took 44 days. In doing so she was the: 1. Youngest woman 2. First American woman 3. Fastest woman 4. Fastest human She cut the previous women’s record (86 days) in half. She beat the previous men’s record (52 days) by just over a week. What a beast. Go ahead and tell...

Friends. A note on supporting folks in Gaza/Palestine… First, do. If you can. Sure, it’s overwhelming and we can’t help everyone. But we can at least help someone. Second, be careful with your donation. Getting scammed hurts you AND takes money from Palestinians who need the help. @aral@mastodon.ar.al and his team are working hard to verify accounts of folks in need: https://gaza-verified.org But don’t blindly look at a Gaza Verified link and assume it’s correct. This is a great take from @jimniels@mastodon.social on designing in the browser. I don’t know that I’ve ever once coded up one of my designs exactly as its source. Once that code hits, it’s always gonna influence what you do with it. He says “with an interface, you have to use it, feel it, interact with it, and poke at it.” 100%. And that’s the reason I believe every designer should code their own work. Once a design is in a browser, everything changes. https://blog.jim-nielsen.com/2026/code-...

Sad days. Layoffs at the company I work for. Close teammates and friends. What a ahitty thing for them. And I have survivor’s guilt. It’s strange to feel sad for others having lost their jobs while concurrently feeling grateful you still have one. Capitalism isn’t the answer. TIL some interesting things about the metric system… 1. Over centuries there were multiple attempts at standardizing a measurements system. France pulled it off during the French Revolution. Two chemists (husband and wife) devised it. 2. The base units were built to be realisable. Meaning based on and provable with nature. 3. The meter was realisable as one ten-millionth of the distance between the North Pole and the equator. Later is was converted to 1/299,792,458 of light speed per second....
