  Lots of profit either means you didn’t pay your employees and contractors enough or that you charged customers way too much. I think about this every time a company announces record profits.   Was thinking earlier about games with action bars, like World of Warcraft, where each item is represented by a full-bleed illustration, masked to a chiseled square— and how gamers are making split-second decisions about which to activate, how long the cooldown is, how many are available. And yeah, there is spacial recognition, but I’ve not heard any gamers say they need distinct silhouettes to differentiate between these. But I keep hearing how it’s allegedly harder to identify apps in a Dock?

  I feel so weird about titles. I see people who are “creative directors” but they seem more like people managers. I see “UI/UX designers” who seem to make more pitch decks than anything. These titles are completely useless as a way to understand what someone actually does. It’s not just title inflation, it’s like... a title masquerade.

  I once thought iPad was a good product but in the last 5 or so years, I’m not so sure. But this foldable phone nonsense? I can’t understand it. I can’t understand why anyone would want this and why Apple would entertain this market. It feels like it’s going to cause more problems than it solves.

  I understand the value of industry recognition, but there’s no award in my field that I respect the selection process enough that receiving their award would mean much of anything. Any award is only desirable to you if you trust that the organization giving it understands your efforts. It has to be respected as an authority in the industry by potential award recipients, but also for people who value it as a form of endorsement. Or else, why bother? Why have it?

  I don’t have enough energy to make a blog post about this but— the Pokémon Winds and Waves logos suck. The composition is fine, but the wordmark for both “Winds” and “Waves” is really poorly executed. I thought— the Japanese logos were probably made first. And yep, those look fine and good to me. But somewhere along the line of localizing to English, they became dumb. I don’t think I have the energy to redraw them, because... for what purpose would it be? They’re not going to change it.

  One (of four) of my first-gen HomePods died a few days ago. It doesn’t respond, it doesn’t turn on, it doesn’t light up. Nothing. Apple will replace it for ¥40,000 (~$250). I know it’s nearly 8 years old. And I know these have a bad reputation. But— Unlike MacBooks and iPhones, HomePod is not really a product that moves around to be mishandled. It sits on a surface. Why am I paying to repair/replace it at all? Any issue with it is undoubtedly an Apple engineering problem, not a Louie problem.
