I am currently (as in: the last few months, more intensely this last few weeks, evenings and weekends) working on a Luxman LV-117 amp that, for lack of a better description, is An Utter Mess. Straight from the factory, the wiring is an utter rat's nest, with at least 30 board-to-board cables going every which way through the amp. The main board alone has _another_ dozen wires on itself, point to point. Mechanically, removing some of the PCBs means disassembling the entire chassis. On...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@zep/116906790195674278 @RefurioAnachro I am sure you could make this a lot more psychedelic and/or fractal :D

#nowplaying blockhead - Music By Cavelight I always find it hard to classify this. Is it hiphop? Yes, here and there. But also Downtempo, but neither of them exclusively. What it definitely is, is enjoyable. "Good God Almighty, all that other bullshit is here today and gone tomorrow." #vinyl #vinylrecords

Dear #fedi, I am in the market for a laser cutter. I would mostly use it to cut PMMA. I have some previous experience with a rather large unit at a previous employer, but I have no idea what manufacturers to avoid etc. I don't need large work area, maybe A3, though A4 might work. Outside size is a bit of a concern as I don't have a large amount of space. Ability to cut metal would be fantastic, but that can be a later upgrade. #makers #repair #righttorepair

If you're a graphic designer for the packaging of #vinylrecords and you decide to maximize the difficulty of telling side A from B, or which record is which in a set, you need to stop trying to be so clever. Tiny fonts, not labeling anything, obscuring text by visually noisy backgrounds.... I could go on. Please don't do it. It's not clever (it's annoying), it's not novel (it's been done), and it's not proving anything except that you hate...

I don't often send my #vinylrecords through the wash, but when I do, it's usually worth it :blobtonguewink: I don't use the official Spinclean method/chemistry to wash them, but my method seems to works at least as well --- and is cheaper and less tiring. #vinyl

Memo to self: if your Bode plots make no sense whatsoever, make sure you're using the _tracking generator output_ of your scope, not the 1kHz square standard-gen 🤦 #electronics #repair #WerMisstMisstMist

Well, the diff-pair/VAS on this LV-103 is doing some wild stuff. The output of the power transistors (Y) slams first into the negative rail (~7s), then the positive (~7s), while the feedback circuit (R) lazily tries to steer it back to zero. Meanwhile, the protection IC (G, HF-looking noise can be ignored) is just puzzled (as am I) but eventually clicks the relay on. Now the question is: is this amp designed this way? 30s to stabilize seems long... 1/x #electronics #righttorepair #repair #hifi

That moment in the middle of an #electronics #repair when you realize you forgot to order four components, you definitely won't get them before next week, *and* you will have to pay extra for shipping because the product value is so small *AND* you can't continue with most of the repair since otherwise you'll have to take everything apart again once the components arrive. Sigh. I have a _right_ to repair, dammit! ;) #righttorepair

This Matsushita capacitor is ~50 years old, and should be 47µF/25V, as labeled. Its actual capacitance as measured* is almost 78µF. Yay free extra capacitance! And even the ESR is low! * Measuring capacity like this is not the same as "this capacitor can perform like this at the rated voltage and other specs". In this particular case, due to being out of spec and the reputation of these caps (they are leak-prone), it will have to be replaced and recycled. #electronics #repair...
