If avoiding LLMs and GenAI in general is like “tech veganism”, I would probably identify as a vegetarian. And much like real life veganism, realistically the vast majority of people, even with great effort, will probably only be about ~95% vegan. This isn’t to say it is useless to try and be vegan, if even only 50% of people were vegan that would be so significant to carbon impacts that we would absolutely smash all our climate goals that these days seem impossible to meet so it’s not nothing.

No one appreciates that the admin tier group names at work are based on Unix file permissions. 7 for “super admin”, 6 for standard admin, and 4 for IT support/help desk level.

My dying wishes are to be turned into plant food and fed to a tree. A nice looking tree. Not one of those crappy trees. Actually the best thing you can do after dying is giving people a huge list of chores. Having the list already done is key.

I think the AI datacenter companies thought that since NIMBYs are misanthropes like they are, that they would be welcomed with open arms.

I was at the mall this weekend, probably the first time in 2 years since it’s an hour drive away but like holy shit are the GenAI posters everywhere now.

I used to joke about the anti-systemd people about their init scripts being handcrafted by local artisans, every boot up an objet d'art. And now here I am on FreeBSD, customizing my /etc/rc.conf so it looks pretty.

So today some guy comes to sell me on spraying for bugs. Like he’s saying he’s going to eradicate all the spiders and ants and shit on our property. No. Why do people do this? We kill the spiders, they eat the bugs! We make our lawns toxic wastelands for bugs then complain about all the fireflies being gone. Stop spraying for bugs. Unless the Zika virus is ripping through your area, the bugs are fine. We are planning a pollinator garden so if anything we are increasing the bugs.

I don’t care how much money Google “pledges” to the community or how many jobs it creates, or that a PGA golf course uses more water than entire AWS availability zones, I want raw numbers. All of these projects outside the handful of insane Gigawatt scale AI data centers (and pre-existing data centers too), do not publish any raw numbers really. Can anyone find out if the upcoming Ohio ballot initiative to ban data centers over 25 MW in size will actually do anything? #askfedi #ohio

What is interesting is Microsoft’s insistence that Office Macros are a security risk and need to be disabled by default and have a roadmap for completely excising them from Office entirely. And then they also insist that end users should be empowered to create their own “agents” that automate their job. Like Excel macros could automatically generate a report and email it. Now an agent will be able to do the same but be “programmed” using natural language. Time is a flat circle.

My wife is a professor and so many students do not understand what a file is or where files are saved. Every year some students send pictures taken from their phone to her email instead of the spreadsheet just being uploaded to the portal. My daughter’s first desktop Operating System she is going to use will be FreeBSD 😈. She doesn’t have to be a “computer person” but she will at least know what a file is. #freebsd #runbsd

SpaceX has announced plan to buy Cursor So they are straight up not going to moon now right? Because the past year they have merged with xAI, talked about a Morbillion Datacenter Satellites in space, they are not making great progress on Starship, are pivoting away from the colonize Mars shit and now are spending billions on a VS Code fork. Somehow, this fuck is going to be worth a trillion dollars. I cannot imagine a more vile, stupid person, yet he’s becoming more powerful than ever.

Reminder that gerrymandering can be permanently ended by just having a Single At-Large district per State (or even just at the National Level) and using either Ranked Choice or Approval voting. The manner which elections are conducted is controlled by the States however they see fit, and there is no specification for the concept of individual districts just what the proportion of representation each State should have by population.

Love the email from my Representative saying that he hears and understands my concerns but then spends 90% of the email talking about how awesome Trump is and how hard he works to support the Trump administration’s mission to Make America Great Again. Zero acknowledgement of my concerns about Trump unilaterally starting a war in the Middle East without Congressional authorization and all the various war crimes and horrors Trump is inflicting on the world the past few weeks.

> The problem with calling the current AI market a bubble and comparing it to the dot com bubble is that the Internet still exists and is bigger than ever! The demand is here now! 🥴🤦♂️ Buddy, the 2008 Housing Crisis was a subprime mortgage bubble collapse and demand for housing never went away and is higher than ever. We still have banks! We still have houses! AI being a bubble in no way predicts that there will be no more AI after it pops.

> You need to contact the insurance company to figure out what they will cover. > You need to contact the provider to know what billing code they plan to use for treatment you haven’t even scheduled yet will be billed as to figure out how much it will cost. Somehow, someone, has to know how much healthcare costs. Even just transparency in costs would solve so many stupid problems.

Has anyone ever used IPv6.rs here? And if so, what is your experience? Less than $5 a month for essentially a public IP with some kind of ngrok/proxy from your host out? Seems like an easy way to self-host and not need to port forward or open up anything on my home network. #askfedi #selfhosted #ipv6

I think instead of encouraging shoplifting from Whole Foods, Hasan Piker should get involved in a local food bank. He has a large audience, clearly has money, and instead of streaming all day long every day, uses his platform to encourage his followers to volunteer and community build once a week. He could probably lobby the government to help fund before and after school food programs for children. He has a lot of money and just complains about the system instead of doing anything it seems.

By now it seems probably that it could be scientifically proven that there is a threshold of money, that once you cross you simply become less capable of thinking. More dollars than sense. All rational thought replaced by greed or something. And for some people it doesn’t even need to be that much.

It’s not true communism unless it splits into at least 3 diametrically opposed factions that spend more time fighting each other and causing drama than advancing the cause of communism.

The amount of time and energy spent gnashing teeth and hypothesizing their totally backwards compatible with IPv4 no need to change anything I swear guys protocol heartbreaker one could learn the basics of IPv6 multiple times over.
