I was listening to a #99PI episode on an obscure 18th century lawyer from Boston writing pamphlets before the Revolutionary War, and they just casually mentioned without drawing any attention to it, that the face of the oppressors doing the whole taxing without representation thing were (immigration and) customs enforcement agents. Funny that.

This is the story of how I learned to do fiberglass repair. About a month ago, we ran into the duck doing a sails-up reposition on the pier, and thus discovered a paste-only repair from a previous owner. The initial hole was only maybe two inches tall, but this is what it looked like after I dug out most of the old repair #ItsAlwausTheSkippersFault #sailing

Not wanting to replicate the previous craftsmen's work, I carefully set about fashioning an interior layer of fiberglass and resin, using the method prescribed for what is called a "blind-hole" patch Not shown: I did the same on the other side #ItsAlwausTheSkippersFault #sailing

Was browsing the NYPL Most Influential Books list. Lotta heavy reading in ther (and some clunkers imho) but not exclusively. Encephalitis has left me less able to read no-fiction, but I'm keeping this list around. https://www.bklynlibrary.org/america-250/booklist/ #bookstodon #NYPL

#MusicWomenWednesday Nina Gerber is a guitarist, known most widely as the long time accompanist for legendary songwriter and folk singer Kate Wolf. Her sense of timing and composition, the way she artfully emphasised Kate Wolf's singing, have been a huge influence on my own playing. When I'm talking with session musicians on my projects, I point to Gerber as an example of what I'm after. A songwriter in her own right, she's published many albums. https://nin...

the other day someone who knows much of my recent story heard about injuring my arm in a guitar accident and said she thought I must be unlucky. I said, "after what I've survived?? I'm the luckiest woman you know," and that's stuck with me since. over the intervening days I've come to be grateful she asked -- I don't think I'd have quite noticed this way, if she hadn't.

Today is Bandcamp Friday, right? I freaking love folk music -- traditional, singer songwriter, indie, it's my jam. It's my wake up playlist. I have a couple dozen albums on my bandcamp wish list. If you buy my record, I can buy someone else's and make those wishes come true! My most recent album, "I'll Be Right Here, Too" 13 songs for 15 bucks: https://jennifervenawood.bandcamp.com/album/ill-be-right-here-too And here's what I hope to...

Listening to an episode of Folk on Foot, and once again being reminded of how many musicians' journeys to finding their own creativity took them through jug band music, and finding some satisfaction in seeing that as part of my own winding road to becoming a songwriter. #FolkMusic #Folk #Songwriting

I remember one "half-way day" event, three weeks into a six-week summer camp, where the theme was swapping clothes with another camper of a different gender, and I got to wear a skirt for the first time. The only comments anyone made were about how the hadn't seen me smile so much in... ever. It was only one day in 1986, yet I still remember exactly what that skirt looked like and how it felt to wear. And this is why I will ALWAYS fight for trans kids. @alexadeswif...

What do you get when you cross the greatest nautical adventure series written (Hornblower), with the most wholesome swashbuckling romance ever put to film (The Great Race), rewritten from the viewpoint of a young woman as the heroine of it all? ARABELLA OF MARS by @daviddlevine That's what. And it's AMAZING. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #Bookstodon #SFF

THE STRANGE CASE OF THE ALCHEMIST'S DAUGHTER by Theodora Goss ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great storytelling, brilliant characters, a novel narrative device that blends seamlessly into the story. Brilliant mashup and reimagining of stories and characters from 18th and 19th century sf adventure and horror woven into a new and compelling story and heroine. I'm not sure if it was published with pages yellowed by age or if that's just my library's copy, but it certainly fits the mood....
