Still bummed to be missing #fedicon, but this wedding has an open bar.

Canadians, #fediforum regulars, and those of you who are unconference-curious - are you interested in checking out the seemingly *very* un-conferenced https://reimaginefestival.ca ? I've just signed on. The "schedule" runs August 12 - 26th, but the platform is open now for those who wish to participate or co-create, and it looks like it includes recurring sessions to set up for those who want to convene sessions.

Who is out here still knitting nowadays? 🧶 I still use Ravelry on the regular (its the *first* social site where I grabbed johannab as a handle before the other johannabs showed up). But the friends & groups just makes me sad, because the social spheres migrated away to other places. My brain and eyeballs shut down from desk-sized screen use today so I picked up some languishing knitting but then that triggered a bunch of weird grief because of all the missing or disconnected ppl i’ve...

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@jenniferplusplus/116970314282378969 This whole thread. The biggest problem with the internet today is the monetization model. Advertising went very, very wrong by not gibetting Canter and Siegel immediately in 1994. I continue to *love* seeing ads on exactly one site and that’s Ravelry. Both the content and they design of the way they are presented is the most under-acknowledged brilliance in marketing today.

huh. pharmaceutical access went slightly in the right direction for a change. I hadn't paid close attention, because my pharmacy costs seem to be a monthly random number generator anyway, but when I discussed my last refill with my endo, she asked if my Ozempic price adjustment worked. Seems that with Novo having forgotten some bureaucratic paperwork, the generics hit the Canadian market last month, and now the cost is about 25% of what it was. Still out of pocket, but almost in budget...

Just noticed something that looks to be a thing between @gotosocial and @pixelfed (@dansup), and I'm not sure where/how to report. Pixelfed and its usual forks do not display text-only posts, so if I follow someone on a Mastodon server I still only see content with media attached. However, it seems if I follow a GoToSocial account, I see text posts, or at least boosts of text-only posts. What's different about this?

Oh, damn. This is awful. I recently "discovered" Glen Hansard (realizing in recent years the name/performer behind several songs I liked). https://www.cbc.ca/news/entertainment/obit-ireland-hansard-9.7288673

One of the biggest, possibly THE biggest challenge of the Open Social Web is funding its operations. This place is built largely as a labour of love by volunteers who have an hour or a few free in a week, and possibly not on a regular basis. It's more than just your personal Mastodon login, too. Whether you know it or not, IFTAS is among the services that you benefit from, even though they don't offer a Mastodon server for your posting shenannigans. Consider donating. https://about.if...

Kid and I did lighten up on the walk home, getting into a set theory and language discussion on the interrelationships of birb, chonk, and borb after passing a dozen or so fat robins having a field day on a wormy lawn in the rain. I was told I have to ask the fediverse: is borb a special case of chonk, implying that all borb are chonk and thus “chonky borb” is redundant, or does chonk remain a valid additive to borb thus implying that “chonk” and “borb” are distinct but have an intersection?

So this wave of LLM-based agents trying to sign up for Fediverse server then abuse them is bad. Fucking dismal, particularly for small and intentional community servers moderated by 1 or a few people, who are trying to be welcoming but have to manually approve every invite. But it's having 2nd and 3rd order effect on other admins, too, as people are now super-sensitized to this and not distinguishing one type of behaviour from another and reporting everything they think is a "bot"...

RE: https://indieweb.social/@elgg/116674569319358132 Yanno, maybe these social media bans for kids will be better than we think. Because it’s not going to stop kids from socializing online. It’s just going to keep it farther from their parents’ and teachers’ eyes, and it’s going to be so frustrating for them that they won’t learn to not use “social media”, they will build their own ways and be all that much closer to tearing down the world we’ve already ruined for them and building one that’s...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@OpenMediaOrg/116517516303137157 CANADIANs ... If you have not come across this effort yet, or have not reviewed and signed on ... please take a moment and do so. Bill C22 is as bad if not worse than it's predecessor attempt C-2, and the earlier implemented C-18 which had the exact opposite effect on Canadian online media presence than everyone (well, everyone but us already-federated folk) thought. Consider that Signal Messenger has indicated it will wi...

RE: https://cosocial.ca/@dyckron/116525251960648882 Why do we have to ruin nice things with partisanism and one-upping different orders of government? A tool like this has to be running on open data, or something that should be open. It needs to be a tool usable by the public.

Just skimming my timelines after the talks today veered to social web funding forms, and this was right in line for me: https://proton.me/blog/what-is-your-data-worth-to-google We need to know more things like this - not to be outraged, and not be delighted, not to gloat or scream for someone's head cuz they got what you don't... but so human beings are informed enough to make informed choices and give informed consent. Does Google offer ME enough value for the probably $95 a...

RE: https://mastodon.iftas.org/@iftas/116523147739252751 Friends/fam - IFTAS has been of great benefit to our open Fediverse, and like most essential infrastructure (from neighbourhood pavement to IT to social services...) it goes unnoticed when the hard work is getting done right. NO ONE else is serving or supporting your community administrators and moderation teams across, rather than within, single instances. If you value "fediverse" and want to see it run better - plea...

Holy hell, the whiplash when the whole day is about digital/AI governance... https://bsky.app/profile/audhd-psychnp.com/post/3mklnpubna224 "...records and stores text, video, and audio messages with clients and, as the company’s CEO told investors, has amassed “one of the largest mental health data banks in the world,” containing 140 million message exchanges. The end goal: training a soon-to-be-released AI therapy companion bot," The conditions that led to that paragraph being publ...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@reiver/116484150354505930 Ok today I got the contact info for the director of the Digital Governance Hub that put on my #FediForum -conflicting conference, and daaaayyyyum, folks, I totally need to connect these two orgs so they can co-host the next thing? Thought here … #fediforum, #fedidev, #atproto builders who are deeper in the architecture than I can get… Are there any self-hosting options out there that can literally just be the sign-in server for other services? Where’s our independent, federated “sign in with {Google/fb/linkedIn/mastodon}” option? Am I just talking about a Mastodon instance that doesn’t federate and doesn’t allow posting? Maybe this is not even a need, I’m trying to assemble a systems theory map in my head.

The upside of a couple of the #fediforum presentations having a higher gravitational pull than usual today is that @jaz@toot.wales and I got a semi-private hack hour with @mapache@hachyderm.io to kick some @fediprofile@social.vocalcat.com tires and fam, one thing I love about FediForum is that there are So. Many. Ideas. that get their legs and start at a run. @johannab@profile.stone-soup.ca is now out here if you want to follow some experiments/sandboxing for a bit.

RE: https://dair-community.social/@emilymbender/116454543787345457 Dr. Bender just called out one of the “unacknowledged stakeholders” concerns I started noticing when I jumped into some systems-heavy classes last year. This hype-driven AI in all things wave is particularly risky in healthcare where it could lead to delisting patients for not being sufficiently compliant *with AI recordkeeping*. That is abhorrent. These things have entered the Medical Devices space, utterly unchallenged and u...
