The 24th week of the Israel-US-Iran war begins A couple more weeks and it will be 6 months. Does anyone know what's going on? Is the Strait of Hormuz fully open? Is Lebanon, Gaza, West Bank, Iran, Oman, still being bombed? No, No, Yes. Get Your War On

Seen on x-fka-twitter THE SLOW DEATH OF BRITAIN: We have shit water companies so we buy bottled water. We have rubbish police so we hire private security. We have terrible healthcare so we pay private hospitals instead. Airbnbs in Cornwall pay council tax but get no rubbish collection, so they pay Biffa on top. An awful lot of firemen are now volunteers. NHS dentists don’t really work anymore, so you go private or you pull it out yourself.

Old enough to remember the Vietnam war, Afghan invasions, Berlin wall and all the rest. But it still seems strange for both the USA and Russia to be stuck in unwinnable wars, simultaneously.

CIC means "Child In Chief", not "Commander In Chief" This war is brought to you by the Military-Industrial-Entertainment complex.

The Tories introduced a law in 2020 that enabled a court to try one crime by jury, but then for the judge to sentence based on another. So criminal damage becomes terrorism with a much longer sentence without the jury ever being told. And then Labour ran with it. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/jul/31/basic-rights-global-freedoms-prosecution-rajiv-menon

One US datacentre goes off line from the Eastern electricity grid when it's supply tripped out. The grid then caused 10 minutes of frequency fluctuations on the entire Eastern Interconnection. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auUjFeySHM8 Hooray! AI is going to force us to spend money to update and modernise the grid. Long overdue. For the benefit of everybody. Is there nothing AI can't do?

Old enough to remember when an oil crisis resulted in petrol rationing and 50mph limits. So, I'm waiting for those better days, and that silver lining. Maybe the continuing current oil crisis might encourage us to build for resilience and wean ourselves off fossil fuels. Even a little bit. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/jul/27/commander-in-chief-of-chaos-victims-trump-wars So it goes.

A reply re LASIT. > Please keep in mind that Robin Simcox, the UK's "Commissioner For Countering Extremism", is actually a Heritage Foundation Fellow and specifically worked for the American Christian right wing, not just generic "think tanks."

Down in deepest Essex, I see another round of performative nonsense has broken out in The Farridge. In The Muckrakers Arms next door, the entire pub is out in the street to watch the show. The rest of the village has only a couple of questions. Is it bin day today? and which bin?

I refer the honourable gentleman not to the reply in Arkell v. Pressdram, but to David Davis in 2008. Davis resigned as an MP to stand in a single-issue by-election in 2008 to make a point and the major parties refused to field candidates. Ideally, nobody stands against Farage, he walks straight back into Parliament without the need for a by-election. Where he then immediately faces the exact same inquiry into abuse of parliamentary rules.

Good discussion on long term collapse. https://collapse2050.substack.com/p/malthus-was-right Malthus, like Ehrlich after him, was working with very primitive models. It inspires discussion but should not be taken as predictive models. Two key points :- 1) Population size and food production are just two variables in an extremely complicated and interdependent system. The Limits to Growth models in the mid 70s were an attempt to quantify this. Our models now are more sophisticated again.

Thoughts from an anonymous Labour MP on Labour's leadership troubles. > “We have to face up to the fact every single one of them is fucking useless. Andy’s strategy has been a disaster. Angela bottled it. Ed clearly a hiding to nothing. Wes AWOL. God knows what Catherine West is doing. Not quite sure how we ended up here.” https://x.com/jessicaelgot/status/2053829321135919324

#Cocktail - Honeybee 60ml Light Rum, 25ml Lime, 15ml honey syrup, dash Lemon Honey syrup is always a bit vague. You may have to adjust the lime and honey up and down for this Honey-Daiquiri. And then ring the changes, Goslings, Aged, Gold, White rum, 1/2 Rum and Bourbon, gin, cognac, and so on. Lime, honey and spirit is all good. Honey syrup: 3 honey, 1 hot water, cool.

I was given a new coffee drip machine for a birthday. It makes great coffee. Huzzah! It's internet connected. With very old firmware out of the box. The app took several tries and a hard reset of the machine to connect to their servers via wifi. But you just have to wait for the firmware update. Gah! Why can't I just click a button on the app, download it and install it? Why does IoT universally suck?

#Cocktail - Charlie Pie 40ml Gin, 30ml Red Vermouth, 10ml Campari, Cherry All the negronis with altered proportions have their own character. And quite rightly, their own names.

#Cocktail - Spagett Bottle Miller HiLife, One swig, refill top with Aperol, Squeezed lemon wedge If you don't live in the USA, and don't have easy access to the "Champagne of beers" (tastes great less filling), just put 25ml Aperol and a big lime/lemon squeeze in a collins glass, and add whatever stubby you have to hand.

I have this sneaking suspicion that Starmer has by accident, played a blinder. The party and challengers are so useless that we'll look back at Conference in the autumn and Starmer will still be there. While all his challengers will have fallen in disgrace to the backbenches. Is that good or bad for the country? I have no idea.

#cocktail - Georgetown Club #2 60ml Light Rum, 20ml Dry Vermouth, 2.5ml Falernum, Orange twist Half way decent white rum is annoyingly hard to obtain. Or more expensive than it should be. Anyway. It's a rum Martini, right?

#Cocktail - The Wall Streeter: 60ml Rye, 20ml Cointreau, 7.5ml Grenadine, 15ml Egg White I can't be doing with egg whites so that's optional. Reminds me of El Presidente with too much Grenadine. There should be named versions of that with the rum swapped for all the other spirits. Eg 60ml rye/gin/cognac/tequila/vodka, 20ml dry vermouth, 5ml curacao, 5ml grenadine.

We're now into the 9th week of the Israel-US-Iran-Lebanon war. - US Negotiaters called off - Israel continues to ignore the Lebanon ceasefire, bombing and destroying southern Lebanon - The Hormuz Strait is still blocked by both Iran in close and US further out. But on this Monday morning, it's dropping out of the news cycle.

The local Rightists seem to really hate Palestine. And especially councils that support the BDS movement against Israel. Their inherent Islamophobia, Anti-Islam and Anti-Iran hatred overrides any inherent Antisemitism. So do your bit by boycotting Apartheid Sabra Houmous and Jaffa fruit! Though that can get tricky when Tesco's Finest Easy-Peelers are sometimes from Spain and sometimes from Israel. https://www.spellingmistakescostlives.com/bdssupermarket

#Climate - CO2 concentration 430ppm. Fastest ever rise. Still accelerating - Arctic Ice extent Jaxa, lowest in the records for this day - Sea surface temp 60N-60S roughly equal first and on an upwards trajectory to a big El-Nino later in the year. Some datasets show the temp at highest ever in the last few days. So it goes.
