Yesterday and today it was apparently my turn to have a widely distributed scraper network hammer my instance. Not really hard enough to cause performance issues but at a higher request rate than all my legit traffic, and it rubs me the wrong way to provide content for them, so some quick scripting later both nginx and CloudFront are (reactively) filtering 1000s of IPs.

@chiffchaff@tech.lgbt not sure... on my host it was showing up as garbage TLS connections (or requests) in nginx logs, so I just matched lines for that and added them to a pf table which blocked everything, and killed state on them too. looked like random residential IPs. it's been affecting the whole provider since Sunday evening, they've been working on mitigating it with HE

Bit of old-school DDoS-mitigation this morning (entire provider getting hit, but tinkered with some pf things on my host to reduce log noise etc)

Setting up a new dash cam and it seems with suitable connectivity they can (if configured) live update location and stream video to anyone with the app?! There’s quite a lot on the map, I wonder if all those users realised that’s what they were setting it to. I will not be enabling any of that.

A coworker made an AI-voiced demo video of a thing and halfway through explaining one of the slides it just goes "Andrew! (sigh)" and then carries straight on. It's not in the script.

FreeBSD 15.1 successfully installed on the Ugreen NAS and zpool created using spare disks sitting around from upgrading those in the Synology. Disks and network card all seem to work but not tested performance yet. Will play properly later, as long as it and I are not overheating. Only obvious thing not working is the status/drive LEDs on the front panel, which I guess needs a driver to attach and control them - they keep doing the just-powered-up animation. #FreeBSD

Ok I sorted out building (precompiling) the mastodon assets on a different (amd64) machine and copying them up to my actual host (since FreeBSD/arm64 does not seem easy to run the process on any more. I've set up a jail on a machine at home to do it in; in case it's of any use to anyone else, here's the notes I scribbled myself as I was doing it #FreeBSD #mastoadmin 1/2

Anyone I know running #FreeBSD on a Ugreen NASync? Eyeing up the DXP4800 Plus since you can apparently install your own OS on it, and I have some spare disks I could zfs with it. Found the odd mention online of people having it work but maybe issues with the NIC?
