Yesterday and today it was apparently my turn to have a widely distributed scraper network hammer my instance. Not really hard enough to cause performance issues but at a higher request rate than all my legit traffic, and it rubs me the wrong way to provide content for them, so some quick scripting later both nginx and CloudFront are (reactively) filtering 1000s of IPs.

If nothing else my instance traffic use sits within the AWS free tier for DTO (pretty comfortably really) and it irks me to have that used up by someone scraping thousands of mastodon tags I’ve never used myself
