  Someone on HN asked why Erdos problems are so heavily represented in AI math, and got a confident response that it’s because they’re a significant proportion of open problems. This is a god tier “what are you talking about?” response.   A lot of complaints about JIRA are about bad processes built on JIRA, but you can’t deny the software is slow and functions poorly. One of my perpetual complaints is that clickable elements appear on screen, but are not clickable until some JavaScript has finished loading. This state change is invisible, because what user needs to know whether a button is clickable? They enjoy the surprise!

  @b0rk I remember a post (probably on Twitter) that said roughly “lots of debugging advice says to form a specific hypothesis and test it, but I often find that’s not how I operate, I’m often exploring what’s going on without having a specific hypothesis” and I thought it might have been your post. Does that sound like a thing you said (not asking you to find the post for me). There’s a bit about exploring and figuring out one fact in The Pocket Guide to Debugging, but nothing quite like that.

  Yesterday, a HN question made me realize something interesting (that vector addition systems were equivalent to the word problem over commutative monoids). I mentioned it to some friends, and one of them didn’t see it. I don’t really know about vector addition systems, so I turned to Google, at which point I found out that my post had already reached the top 10 google results for the subject.   I see people saying that LLMs being good at programming busywork means we won’t optimize to fix boilerplate. The problem is that while there are some really bad APIs, most of the time it’s agonizingly difficult to find more expressive ways to program compared to current general purpose languages. No one is coming up with something that will make you say “god I can’t believe how slow it was back when I wrote Python.”
