"Desert Ranges" (1940) is a powerful, late-period landscape by Maynard Dixon, showcasing his unparalleled ability to capture the stark, architectural beauty of the Western wilderness. The painting portrays a vast, silent desert expanse dominated by a colossal mountain range that stretches across the horizon under a soft blue sky streaked with wispy clouds. https://stellar-art.pixels.com/featured/desert-ranges-1940-maynard-dixon-1875-1946.html #art #ArtHistory #Western #landscape

Jean-Pierre Hoschede and Michel Monet on the Bank of the Epte by Claude Monet. Over time, Monet gradually became less interested in Impressionism’s precise recording of natural phenomena, endeavouring instead “to reproduce something that exists between the subject and myself, the beauty of the air, something wholly unattainable.” https://stellar-art.pixels.com/featured/jean-pierre-hoschede-and-michel-monet-on-the-bank-of-the-epte-claude-monet-1840-1926.html #art #ArtHistory

Laurette with a Cup of Coffee (1916) by Henri Matisse (1869-1954). This painting was created during a highly productive period in Matisse's career, when he was deeply fascinated by his Italian model, Laurette (Lorette Licotto). He painted her in dozens of poses, using her expressive features to capture fleeting, deeply personal moods. https://stellar-art.pixels.com/featured/laurette-with-a-cup-of-coffee-1916-henri-matisse-1869-1954.html #art #ArtHistory

The Man-of-War Brielle on the River Maas off Rotterdam (1689) by Ludolf Bakhuizen (1630-1708). In 1688, this ship carried Prince William III to England to drive King James II from power. The Latin inscription on the red flag translates as ‘for faith and freedom’. Bakhuysen painted this picture in 1689, the year in which William III and Mary Stuart were crowned king and queen regnant of England. https://stellar-art.pixels.com/featured/the-man-of-war-brielle-on-the-river-maas-off-rotterdam-1689-l...

Road to Louveciennes, Snow Effect (1874) by Alfred Sisley (1839-1899). Pierre-Auguste Renoir is said to have stated that painted snow should reflect all colors in its surroundings and should thus never be depicted using pure white. Here Alfred Sisley has worked out the forms of the snow-covered landscape with warm shadows of light blue and pink. https://stellar-art.pixels.com/featured/road-to-louveciennes-snow-effect-1874-alfred-sisley.html #art #ArtHistory #impressionism #winter #snow #landsc...

Cotopaxi (1862) by American landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900). Cotopaxi is one of the highest volcanos in the Andes Mountains of South America. Like many of his contemporaries, Church was fascinated by volcanos both because of their power and because they were a prime subject of contemporary scientific research, which was in the process of proving that the Earth was much older than previously believed https://stellar-art.pixels.com/featured/cotopaxi-1862-frederic-edwin-church-...

Haystacks on the Newburyport Marshes (1862) by Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904). Unlike the artists associated with the Hudson River school of American landscape painting, Heade was fascinated with the momentary as opposed to the eternal, often painting from nature in an attempt to capture the ever-changing conditions of light and atmosphere. In this sense, he anticipated the preoccupations of the impressionists. https://fineartamerica.com/featured/haystacks-on-the-newburyport-marshes-1862-mart...

The Meadow at Veneux-Nadon (1881) by Alfred Sisley. Through a juxtaposition of shimmering fields of color and a reduction of motifs, Alfred Sisley lends an iridescent vitality and tension to the seemingly monotonous theme. Sisley exhibited the painting at the Seventh Impressionist Exhibition in 1882, in which the group focused on landscapes. https://fineartamerica.com/featured/the-meadow-at-veneux-nadon-1881-alfred-sisley.html #art #ArtHistory #impressionism #landscape #summer #meadows

The Dutch art historian Bredius described his paintings as being: ‘distinguished by their beautifully luminous colors, the large amount of light, and the excellent painting, especially of metal objects; [they] are among the best still lifes of the 17th century’. https://stellar-art....
