Apple's Macintosh brand (now just Mac) is named after the McIntosh apple. It's one of the USA's most iconic brands. The McIntosh apple is Canada's national apple. It's Canada's national apple because it originated here. Was it Trump who said the USA doesn't need anything from Canada?

RE: https://mstdn.ca/@hewer_of_code/117038058366674843 Well, the bug excitement just doesn't end today. I mowed the lawn this evening, and just I was heading back inside, I spotted something crawling on my milkweed. It was a monarch caterpillar! I was sort of hoping, but not expecting, that growing milkweed would play host to a monarch caterpillar. I mainly just wanted to feed them.

I'm putting people who say things like "an LLM has anxiety because it produces text like someone who does" and people who say things like "an LLM is a compiler because I never look at the code it produces" in the same bin.

I was watching a TV series from 2010 last night, and it was made very clear that the Nazis were villains. Only about 5 years later, that consensus began to unravel.

Just spotted what I think is a tiger bee fly in my yard. Most species of bee fly that I know of are smaller than a typical bee, but this thing was huge, bigger than a horse fly, which was until today the biggest species of fly that I knew of.

Now and then I see some counterarguments to claims that GenAI is harmful to the environment. That would be great if turns out to be true, because it would mean we don't need to compromise on environmental regulations to accommodate people/orgs that want to build AI data centres.

I'm kind of wondering, how much could revival of monarchs be helped just by prioritizing native species in gardens at public spaces.

RE: https://mastodon.me.uk/@Floppy/117007843142581793 I am grateful for this work. I launched my dev career on the framework #Amiko is forked off of. I think it's a very useful framework. As a newcomer to the web development at the time, it made it easy for me to get started, while knowing very little about the underlying technologies, like SQL databases and HTTP. But after the thing that happened in 2021, I have barely spoken its name. The original framework author has only made things w...

When people point out that due to "AI" answers, traffic is down all over the web, I feel like they're sort of missing the point of why AI answers are bad. The point of Google and other search engines, from my POV, was to help me find information. Google has ruined finding information.

I just saw a question "Why is it so hard to find Canadian onion?" and I nearly answered that there are 5 species of onion (allium) native to Ontario alone. Whoops. They just meant regular cooking onions.

There are 2 species of cactus native to Ontario. I've been thinking about adding them to my garden, and I found a retailer that sells both. However, both species are very rare in the wild. I'm guessing the ones for sale are not derived from Ontario's wild populations.

I don't really understand how people can make the argument that it's ok when GenAI makes mistakes because humans were making mistakes before GenAI. We've automated and accelerated human flaws. Seems like a bad thing.
