When i was minding the museum in college, i had to judge an art contest between high schoolers. There were some amazing entries there, and past a certain point of accomplishment, it honestly felt incredibly arbitrary. Brush stroke quality, color use - i suppose a professional could have gotten more nitty-gritty but it honestly felt just as much determined by how i felt or what I ate that day. 4th place was skilled enough to celebrate 1st, if not for another piece with minor improvement
