When i was minding the museum in college, i had to judge an art contest between high schoolers. There were some amazing entries there, and past a certain point of accomplishment, it honestly felt incredibly arbitrary.
Brush stroke quality, color use - i suppose a professional could have gotten more nitty-gritty but it honestly felt just as much determined by how i felt or what I ate that day. 4th place was skilled enough to celebrate 1st, if not for another piece with minor improvement

When it comes to judging your skill against others and getting that external validation, it's like At a certain level it's not about what's good, it's about what stands out in what context I never got to talk to those kids, 4th place got zero glory and they're always gonna feel they didn't quite make it, and the fact that they used warm colors instead of cool might have sunk them I can't think of an objective craftsmanship measure that feels legit at that point
