@nev@status.nevillepark.ca this feels like a weird way to dress up right wing protectionism and abuse the increasingly stupid US immigration system.

@AdaraAstin@supervolcano.angryshark.eu @bookstodon@fedigroups.social I hope I see this sometime. This is one of the reasons I love Arrival: Amy Adams' character is written and acted superpbly, on these dimensions.

There's a good bit of scientific evidence suggesting that men and white people are not specifically the driving element behind economic, political, social, humanitarian, and ecological problems in our western meta-society. It's plausible that power itself is the issue. If true, then marginalized groups like women, ethnic minorities, and sexual & gender minorities would be similarly brutal and destructive if they were in charge. As a scientist I say it's time for empiricism. Let&...

Reason #3,429 I'm not popular at parties: I have issues with things like this. Science isn't "real" (The Might Be Giants kinda lost me with that song a decade or two ago). Science is an explanatory framework or a particular kind of investigation process, not the results of those. More importantly (to me), science doesn't actually deal in "reality." It can never establish what's real or not. To be fair, we probably don't have any system of knowledge that ca...

Had a solid, helpful conversation with a person who Knows A Bunch Of Shit about organizations and systems, about subtle but clear problems in liberal/progressive organizations of leadership getting authoritarian and pissy while insisting they aren't. For example, leaders refusing or just declining to use within-organization expertise to address problems because that increases power of the rank-and-file and therefore reduces the relative power of the leadership. Anyway, it's awesome to h...

I'm like 50 years late to this realization because I have avoided horror media for most of my life (I mostly still avoid #horror, but I used to, too). A lot of horror is weirdly (to me) idealistic. If spurned dead lovers, innocent death row executions, tortured children, genocided indigenous communities, aggrieved ecosystems, etc. really could wreak havoc from beyond the grave, cops would never invoke qualified immunity, molesting clergy would choose different occupations, colonizers would b...

I've been working on a ridiculous fortune telling system for entertainment (thinking of calling it something like VERY BAD TAROT AND FORTUNE TELLING BY SOMEONE WHO HAS NO MYSTICAL ABILITIES WHATSOEVER). I wanted some coins I could engrave symbols on. I was looking at Ali Express and ebay for coin blanks. They are $0.50 to $1.50 each, in bulk (USD). Suddenly I realized I have lots of coin blanks and they are only $0.01 to $0.25 plus a few minutes with a dremel tool :D #diy #maker #cheap

One weird consequence of recent internet history: AI summaries often get around the problem of search engines returning masses of low-effort, low-quality, firewalled, or clickbait websites instead of actual information by giving users (possibly/probably accurate) information about many topics without what has become a familiar runaround. Try searching (regardless of the search engine) for information about a specific topic: in many cases, you can't find any information about it from the fir...

I just heard about tribe.net and the context seemed to imply two interesting things: It used to be something else (maybe a forum site?) while now it is a #mastodon instanceIt has burners! Hooray! I've been disappointed in my #RegionalBurn experiences this year... until now! My "home burn," #PlayaDelFuego (PdF), in PA, was a no-go because of vehicle issues, and my autumn burn, #ConstellationBurn (also in PA), was canceled. But I just got back from #POrtalBurn in southwestern NY (USA). It's a small burn on a pretty hillside and it was delightful. Snacks, drinks, absolutely wonderful people to talk to (and approximately 2 people who seemed like dickheads but were still po...

My 15-year-old daughter just discovered feminist cinema criticism. a. This is awesome b. She consistently surprises me with how much she understands c. She got here by way of a video essay on youtube that might have oversimplified the thesis. This led her to hunt down the original (1984) paper, with some help from me d. She has printed the paper, bound it like a little book, and has spent the past two hours in her room reading it. #kids #parenting #awesome #win

I was at a get-together at someone's home in a very tiny town in rural Pennsylvania (USA) last night. Just a dozen or so friends getting together, and I was invited as a +1. Three of the people there made excellent music (original and covers of others' music) and played/sang it for us. Like... damn. Tiny town with a population of less than 1,000, hours from anywhere politically impactful, and this happens. I am sometimes amazed at how much art is made by humans, pretty much everywhere....

RE: https://infosec.exchange/@guyjantic/116564009962120990 This wasn't idle musing. I don't have the answers, but I grew up #Mormon, with stories of the #LDS leaders being hunted and imprisoned for, IDK, maybe 5 decades, for practicing polygamy. The morality, reality, propaganda, etc. of that aside: I grew up in the US West bathed in stories of the Evil Government abusing my ancestors, ignoring other people abusing them, and then passing laws specifically to abuse them about their marri...

"Do the ends justify the means?" After thinking about this for many years my answer is that this isn't the whole question. A really big missing issue--sometimes the most important part--is who you become in the process. You convinced yourself you had to do the "necessary, temporary" evil things to defeat evil, and now who are you? What do you offer the world? Like that German guy said, fighting monsters can make you into a monster. At that point, there might be no more...
