Why do most uranium glazed pieces in germany look so bad 😭 I just want some clean fiestaware or similar. At least something that doesn't look like vomit that would give your doctor nightmares

Two million people in this god damned huge-ass village and not a single hobby shop anymore :( A few toy stores sell revell kits, but nothing for RC, and especially DIY stuff :(

I wish nothing more than for people to stop making up "equations" to explain things to people in STEM. It's utter nonsense and only leads to further confusion. It does not make you look smart in any way.

Mistery chip! Can anyone find a datasheet for this one?

Last week a Biergarten here in munich made the news because someone found a "hotspot" with their geiger counter: https://www.br.de/nachrichten/bayern/angebliche-radioaktive-strahlung-einsatz-im-englischen-garten-in-muenchen,VI75G4A OF course I had to go there and check it out myself! The entire area was slightly elevated, barely noticeable and well withing reason for a change in ground composition. That hotspot must have been a tiny rock. In the end I got a nice ~30 km bike t...

One major thing I miss about twitter are the bear bots. You follow them, and every couple of hours you get a nice picture of a big bear (the animal kind) in your feed. I couldn't find anything like that on mastodon :(

Another day another "Household Magnetrons definitely contain Beryllia and if any ceramic looks like the one on my microwave it's also definitely beryllia!" discussion 🙄

Synthesis of piss from household chemicals, the non-biochemical way. And it works surprisingly well, that last shot is two drops of the resultant liquid in 150 ml of water. ...have you ever seen a paper that quotes instructables?! https://arxiv.org/pdf/2603.28875

Finally! After watching them weld at this construction site for months I happened to go by just as they got ready to inspect the welds! The source is a lot smaller than I expected it to be, it's a B-Type container made from depleted uranium. In it is a TBq or so of Ir-192 or Se-75, depending on the weld thickness and material.

There are a lot of warnings for CF / GF loaded 3D printing filaments, so I wanted to see what's going on. I printed a piece of Prusament PP-CF and it felt like a Kiwi fruit! The @FabLabMuc SEM Pics explain why: There are tons of exposed Carbon Fibers on the surface! It's pretty rough overall, doesn't look like any other 3D print I've seen before. I'm surprised how many of these fibers just stick out, like they're not embedded in the plastic at all!...

Wellp, my thesis is due, but I doubt I'll be able to finish it in time with news like these https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1229490/view/494969252845979630?l=english

Raspberry Pis really come with their own flavor of computer sickness, don't they. I pulled one from the scrap pile at work and since then I've been thinking about what to do with it! Many fun ideas, but the second I think about them in any way I realize that this can be done better and cheaper with either a microcontroller or a cheap (or often times free!) old computer.

Random question: Is anyone here working on / with a HVEC Van De Graaff Accelerator? Ideally an "original" belt driven one. I'm looking for details of the charging and terminal brushes, specifically their geometries. There are many different variants with the brushes directly lying on the pulleys, sometimes they're a bit down-stream, sometimes they are down-stream and have an extra opposing electrode... I just would like to know how it was actually done, and not just simple sche...
