  I was discussing thimbles when I suddenly wondered about the word’s etymology. It’s clearly not the same as the German fingerhut (finger hat), and I guessed that it’s something to do with the thumb. So it is. It’s “thumb” plus an instrumental suffix, “-el”, which is added to a root to make a tool name.   The neighbors recently put an addition on their house with an almost flat roof. Anyway, I looked out the window to see that it was raining and an American Robin was bathing in a puddle and getting a shower at the same time. (American Robins aren’t actual robins; they’re thrushes with dark heads and red breasts.)

  A friend recently recommended *I’ll Have What He’s Having* by Adib Khorram. I’d thoroughly enjoyed it a while ago and so I decided to go see what other books he’s written. I’m definitely going to try his other romance novels, but look! Look! A picture book about tea traditions around the world!   I’m reading and enjoying a series of books by E.H. Lupton set in alternate 1969 Madison, Wisconsin. The series is called Wisconsin Gothic and has lots of weird magic and a queer romance. It’s got dark bits in it, but what do you expect from something called Wisconsin Gothic? It’s got the feel of pre-Internet academia down pat (I grew up in that world), as well as libraries and archives. It also feels like my parents are background characters in the book (see third post in thread below). CWs...
