The BBC has seen a small portion of the data which appears to be genuine.   I’m curious what the pay-off is, though. Am I supposed to try to cash it, have it fail and then… what? The URL in the letter is a genuine FTC website. I suppose it could just be a “this is a mailing address for a gullible person” confirmation thing. The fact that they have that name/mailing address combo in the first place points very firmly at an Amazon data breach between three and five years ago.   The FTC website for requesting alternate payment methods gave an invalid claim number error. After a pointless conversation with an Amazon UK person who just seemed bewildered by the whole thing, Amazon US confirmed it was fake and are going to inform the FTC.   Weird: I’ve had a letter from “FTC Prime Subscription Settlement Administrator”, which seems to be a legit thing, but it’s addressed to a friend of mine for whom I have bought stuff from her Amazon wishlist. Most curious, hopefully she’ll get back to me and say it’s ok to open it! Looking online, it’s either a scam or a check for $51 that UK banks mostly won’t cash. Edit: it is indeed a check for $51. Apparently you can ask for it to be sent by PayPal instead, but we’re not sure if it should...

  In hindsight, I should have bought the plinth for my new compost bin. But I didn’t, so any suggestions for a type of container suitable for putting under a screw cap about an inch from the ground to catch the gush of about a mug’s worth of liquid fertiliser that floods out when I unscrew it?
