Shameful behavior from some European member states lacking solidarity with Spain regarding the current developments in #Cueda There's a lot of instrumentalisation going on. But I mostly feel bad for the Moroccan people whose aspirations for a better life are being weaponized by their government, with support from the the US https://legrandcontinent.eu/fr/2026/08/01/comment-se-positionnent-les-pays-europeens-face-a-la-crise-de-ceuta/

🇪🇺🫂 It's amazing to see the EU Civil Protection Mechanism working in such critical times. ❣️ European countries have offered aid resulting so far in 24 patients being transported to hospitals in 🇧🇪, 🇫🇷, 🇩🇪, and 🇮🇹. 💪 Burns Assessment Teams from 🇫🇷 and 🇮🇹 are supporting hospitals🇨🇭 in Valais & Lausanne by providing highly specialised burn care expertise. So far, 21 countries have offered help: 18 for treatment, 9 for transport and 6 offered the experts. https://civil-protection-humanitarian-aid...

Important take-away from HuggingFace: you cannot trust closed weights providers for incident response. They used GLM 5.2 on HuggingFace's own infra to circumvent the provider’s guardrails they were hitting. Also ensured that no attacker data or credentials were leaving their environment. https://huggingface.co/blog/security-incident-july-2026 This is consistent with malware patterns that inject nuclear weapons or biological threats-related text to evade automatic reversing with guardrail...

RE: https://mstdn.social/@Strandjunker/116352713481300858 Bombing bridges and power plants that serve primarily civilian purposes, without clear and immediate military necessity, would violate the principles of distinction, proportionality, and military necessity under International Humanitarian Law. Such actions would likely be classified as war crimes. Yet, most of our leaders are not taking a stand against Trump. Shameful.

While Planet and others US Earth Observation companies are restricting images over Lebanon, Airbus provides critical imagery to reporting on the huge scale of Israeli destruction in Lebanon. "Rights groups have sounded the alarm, warning that Israel’s military offensive is mirroring tactics used in Gaza – from heavy strikes on critical infrastructure and healthcare facilities, to the targeting of journalists and psychological warfare.” https://edition.cnn.com/2026/04/24/middleeast/lebano...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@fj/116872609806928406 When you think about it, the Trump administration attacking refereeing decisions is just the continuation of their attacks on the judiciary. From the ICC and US judges to football referees, they will bully, intimidate, threaten or corrupt everyone that will try to enforce rules in a fair and indiscriminate fashion.

🥇 @EPFL@social.epfl.ch Prof Maryna Viazovska received the 2022 Fields Medal for her work on sphere packing. Maryna met Sidharth Hariharan in 2024 and started a Lean proof for the Sphere Packing theorems. Now, without any additional input outside the paper and work-in-progress repo, the AI agent Gauss completed the proof for dimension 8 in 5 days, expanding the codebase from 20,000 to 60,000 lines. Dimension 24 optimality and periodic uniqueness were completed in about 2 weeks. https://github.c...

Who remembers this? Our community has fought cryptography export controls for years. First they wanted to control exports of transport security, now they want to control model intelligence exports. Our community knows how to solve this problem. Just do it the Phil Zimmermann (PGP) way: print all the model weights in a book so they are protected by first-amendment free speech protections. But the oligarchic tech industry today doesn't seem to have the same ethics & values than back in...

Taylor Hornby, paired with Opus 4.8, found a money minting bug in the Zero Knowledge Proof circuit of Zcash. An element of the Orchard circuit was under-constrained element therefore it was possible to put arbitrary false inputs into an elliptic curve multiplication and still have the multiplication check pass. Shielded Labs is initiating a project to formally verify the Orchard circuit. https://shieldedlabs.net/the-orchard-counterfeiting-vulnerability/

Russia is attacking us not just from space but also at the bottom of the sea. Elisa, the Finnish telecommunications company operating the submarine cables for the Nordic countries, installed an accoustic monitoring of the submarine cables in the Gulf of Finland. Distributed Acoustic Sensing uses the submarine cable as a sensor that measures vibrations in the reflections of light passing through the optical fibre on the seabed. https://news.cision.com/elisa-oyj/r/elisa--the-finnish-border-guar...
