every year on independence day there's this local realtor who stakes up these cheap little plastic american flags on wooden dowels next to each mailbox for all the houses in the neighborhood. the flag's probably like 6" on its short side, the dowel in total probably about a foot, and they usually fade to almost unrecognizable within a week or two. she uses them to tack down her business card by way of advertisement. I just love (read: hate) the juxtaposition of Alito basically saying societal change has been sufficient to eradicate racism in recent decades therefore the provision in the voting rights act no longer has a place (the same argument the executive used for ending DEI programs, by-the-by) and then immediately the next day states rushing to redraw their maps to carve secure seats out of minority districts, even going so far as to postpone primary elections to do it, in the case of Louisiana.
