every year on independence day there's this local realtor who stakes up these cheap little plastic american flags on wooden dowels next to each mailbox for all the houses in the neighborhood. the flag's probably like 6" on its short side, the dowel in total probably about a foot, and they usually fade to almost unrecognizable within a week or two. she uses them to tack down her business card by way of advertisement. I usually take out and toss the one in front of our house the same day. I don't have much to feel patriotic for these days, or any days really, and beyond that get your trash out of my yard. if I had enough energy for it I would see if there's anything I can do with the city, if for nothing else other than littering. that's neither here nor there though. we're coming up on four weeks out from the fourth, and I typically walk our dog after I finish up work for the day, so I'm walking around the neighborhood a fair bit. it struck me that around half of the houses still have these flags sadly flapping. and I just wonder what kind of person, not as a judgment but a curiosity, would leave them? these folks I presume will go get their mail, will maintain their yards. the houses throughout the neighborhood generally have people to care for them and look well kept. so why have the unsolicited advertisements disguised at patriotic decor, these bleached, cheap, plastic flags that flap from their stems which are already seeming to rot from the rain and humidity and sun and heat still around? who is it that looks at these and say are "no, not yet, you get to stay for now." and why are there so fucking many of them in this neighborhood!?
