Sections just landed in Element 🎉 Under the hood they’re Matrix tags as defined in the spec, but with a shiny drag-and-drop UI. It’s what Favourites and Low Priority already used. Now you can group rooms: create a section, add rooms into it, collapse what you don't need, and get unread indicators per section. https://element.io/blog/organise-your-chats-your-way-with-sections/

We're interoperable, so you can be sovereign. Digitally sovereign communications require open standards and interoperability: the freedom to pick and mix backend components, and the ability for separate deployments to federate and communicate on your terms. That's why we build on Matrix - the decentralised open standard no single vendor can own, control or shut down. https://element.io/blog/were-interoperable-so-you-can-be-sovereign/

🇩🇪 The federal government and all 16 Länder have confirmed that ZaPuK - led by @FITKOfoederal@social.bund.de and built on @matrix@mastodon.matrix.org - will be a cornerstone of Germany's Deutschland-Stack. By adopting Matrix, Germany’s federal government and 16 states will operate from an open standard that supports a competitive ecosystem of providers to drive innovation and efficiency based on interoperable open source software. https://element.io/blog/matrix-based-zapuk-confirmed-as-a-c...

🔐 Encrypted chats no longer have to start with a blank slate... For years, end-to-end encryption (E2EE) meant new members joining a chat couldn’t see any history. Conversations stayed cryptographically locked, forcing teams to rely on workarounds like screenshots just to provide context. 👉 Today, that changes. With seamless encrypted history sharing now available in Element, new members can securely access past conversations without compromising E2EE. https://element.io/blog/seamless-encrypt...

Sweden’s Försäkringskassan and Trafikverket use the @matrix open standard to federate with each other, even though they use products from different vendors. 😍 Vendor-agnostic federation FTW! https://www.esamverka.se/aktuellt/nyheter/nyheter/2026-05-22-federation-i-praktiken---nu-kopplas-myndigheters-chattar-ihop.html

Sweden's public sector just went live with Matrix-based federation! Försäkringskassan (using Element branded as SAFOS Chatt) and Trafikverket (Rocket.Chat) are now communicating in real time - two separate agencies, two different vendors, one seamless conversation. Led by eSamverkansprogrammet (eSam) across 40+ member agencies, with plans to expand and formally recommend @matrix as the common standard for secure, interoperable communication across Sweden's authorities. https:/...

RE: https://social.openrightsgroup.org/@openrightsgroup/116435897648441561 Thanks to @openrightsgroup for including us and the @matrix ecosystem in the report “The case for digital sovereignty & the digital commons.” It reinforces a key point: Collaboration software is core infrastructure for digital sovereignty. Strategic investment in open source is essential to avoid vendor lock-in.

We’re hiring a Solutions Architect 🛠️ Element (creators of @matrix) is looking for someone to help governments and organisations adopt sovereign, interoperable and secure communications - breaking free from vendor lock-in, one deployment at a time. This is technical work with real mission behind it. Fluency in German is required 👉 If that sounds like you, apply here: https://apply.workable.com/elementio/j/EEBB814450/

🇪🇺 Digitally sovereign communications need an open standard to enable vendor-neutral federation and prevent lock-in. We’ve mapped out sovereign communications across Europe that support @matrix open standard federation. That’s sovereign and secure communications between separate organisations, and cross-border, without any reliance on a specific vendor. Know of a deployment missing from the map? Contributions welcome. https://element.io/blog/digital-sovereignty-is-built-on-an-open-standard-t...

Good work from Robert Peston, on ITV News, exposing the normality of European leaders simply chit chatting away on WhatsApp – a consumer-grade messaging app run by one of the world’s largest datamining firms. WhatsApp is not fit for use within government. https://www.tiktok.com/@itvnews/video/7626857900132109590?_r=1&_t=ZN-95Pyj5RFC8A

Great analysis article from Sam Clark @POLITICOEurope , picking up on European governments providing sovereign alternatives to WhatsApp and Signal. The article highlights Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Poland all adopting Matrix-based communications - as well as the European Commission and NATO. https://www.politico.eu/article/european-civil-servants-new-messaging-services/

For those still running "pre-ESS era" deployments, the barrier to upgrading has always been the data: “How do I migrate into ESS without starting from scratch?” 🚀 Today, we are officially releasing the ESS Migration Tool to bridge the gap between legacy environments and a modern, manageable Element Server Suite (ESS) deployment. Read the migration guide and see what’s coming next on the roadmap: https://element.io/blog/introducing-the-ess-community-migration-tool/

The latest Signal and WhatsApp breaches targeting German and Dutch government officials prove that consumer apps have no place in government. ❌ As European governments pursue digitally sovereign strategies, they should take the next step: Ban the use of consumer apps like Signal and WhatsApp for government-related conversations. Secure government communications need infrastructure designed for the public sector - not repurposed consumer tools. https://element.io/blog/latest-signal-and-whatsap...

🇪🇺 The Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) is set to reshape digital product security in Europe. From 2027, any product with digital elements on the EU market - including open source - must follow security-by-design requirements. Denise explains what this means for product developers and open source maintainers and how we’re already taking responsibility and building the blocks for our compliance. 👉 Read the blog to learn more: https://element.io/blog/the-cyber-resilience-act-implications-for-open-sou...

Element has signed an open letter to European leaders alongside other organisations. We are concerned that the Danish Presidency’s current proposal on the Regulation for Child Sexual Abuse could introduce backdoors and client-side scanning, creating risks for security, innovation and digital sovereignty in Europe. We urge European leaders to ensure that any approach protects encryption, privacy, and the trust that underpins Europe’s digital ecosystem. https://element.io/blog/element-signs-ch...

At @fosdem 2026, Element’s VoIP team presented MatrixRTC, bringing real time voice, video, and data natively into @matrix rooms. Key ideas include protocol-native real time support, scalable transports, and new building blocks like slots and sticky events, all designed to preserve decentralisation, federation and end-to-end encryption. ▶️ Watch the talk and read the blog for technical details. https://element.io/blog/exploring-matrixrtc-real-time-communication-in-rooms/

At @fosdem 2026, Neil Johnson explored why sustainability is critical for open source - and why it matters even more for decentralised networks like @matrix. 🌱 “Decentralisation without sustainability is just deferred centralisation.” True resilience comes from long-term investment: maintaining infrastructure, investing in independent governance, and keeping core functionality open source. ▶️ Watch the talk and read the blog: https://element.io/blog/sustainable-decentralised-comms-at-element/

Chiara Castro at TechRadar hits the nail firmly on the head. Centralised systems are inherently vulnerable to global outages. One of the many reasons why governments are building out their communications on the decentralised Matrix open standard. https://www.techradar.com/vpn/vpn-privacy-security/we-need-to-go-beyond-signal-how-todays-aws-outage-shows-the-weaknesses-of-centralized-apps
