  My aunt’s ice maker had a failure in the auger drive coupling. A plastic bit that mates to the output drive sheared on the inner portion that seats in the housing. I’m guessing somehow it became bound in such a way that the torque overcame the material strength. I’m going to see if I can find a replacement part. It’s a bit beyond my modeling capability, even being in the freezer I would still be concerned with food safety. I’m guessing I’ll have to buy an entire new assembly though.

  Geeencloud vps has some great deals. 4GB 2 cores, 2GB swap, 35G volume 4TB of traffic on a 10Gbps link for 25 dollars a year. Definitely worthwhile for a beater box / proxy / vpn. Depending on your use case the traffic volume could be a limitation but for 25 annually it’s a great value. I vaguely recall having to contact support as I couldn’t get the console signup to work properly. Got an almost immediate response and was up and running.

  Being able to go wherever I want however I want whenever I want on a bike is how I feel most free. Through a field. Down a trail. Through some alleys or lots. By a lake. Or just down a bike path. As fast or as slow as I can muster. It just feels correct and good. My son is starting to discover these feelings and it makes it even better.

  Oh right I need to charge the car. Let me turn off vpn, get off wifi / stop using pihole, enable location services. Oh no that didn’t work? Okay let me force close, send the unlock. Nope? Maybe nfc works, oh yep there we go. Oh charging port won’t open? Oh right there’s an update pending and the car needs to reboot. Okay it rebooted. Now I can press the “start” button to unlock the charging port. Oh whoops, the lift gate just opened, not the charging port. #enshitification

  How do you handle auth in your #homelab / #selfHosted Assuming you have multiple services that may or may not be shared w others. Are you just using wherever email/password support the application has? Running another service to manage auth?

  About to just swap to k3s at this point. Two libvirt dom interfaces with the same xml on two different domains connected to the same bridge net, both macvtap. Boot a Debian 13 live iso and dhcp is mint. Boot the talos metal iso and dhcp picks up everything but the gateway. Change it to a nat network, dhcp behaves fine. I really don’t want to spend anymore time on this. It seems so silly.

  Man.. so just rewrote all the terraform into modules and to make it more specific for creating a libvirt pool > base image (backed by cloud image) > volume backed by the base image. Ran into a provider bug that doesn’t propagate (or allow you to set) the image which is backed by the base image, so it defaults to `raw` (which also feels like strange behavior). Someone already submitted a PR so I’ll test it later. Not looking forward to then dealing with cloud-init, but it should...

  What’s funny is I’m still getting about 2-3 hours every few days to do hands on keyboard stuff for my lab setup. I’m still not sure how that’s happening but at least I don’t have to go multiple hours a day worth of meetings.

  I don’t miss drinking but I do terribly miss meeting friends at the bar and just having fun. I really just miss my friends. I get to see most of them 1-2 times a year.

  Now there’s a permission issues managing writing the files. I know I’m not cognitively at peak right now but this is not what I want to spend my time on. My instinct was then to write a small python program. Which I recall was exactly what I did as a I want to learn more python, in 2018. Unfortunately I lost that code somewhere. Going to see what exists and what the libvirt api looks like. Or go if there’s a better library option or something.
