Okay I saw The #Odyssey. It is an impressive feat of film-making. Some scenes are absolutely breathtaking and stay with you long afterward. The casting is inspired, the acting is brilliant, the cinematography is astonishing. But I get the sense that Christopher Nolan only has one kind of hero. The dark, brooding, deep intellectual yet also strong guy who carries the weight of civilization on his shoulders. Dark Knight. Father of the Bomb. It's like he was hooked by the first line of Emil...

Stop calling them the #canadianwildfires These are fires caused by American-led global inaction on #climate change Canada did not ask for them. Canada did not cause them. But Canada is paying for them. We are stretched thin picking up after our lazy neighbors. if only the US would take this moment as a wake up call to pick up their damn trash. But instead of realizing.they need to about face on.climate as the result is literally hitting them in the face, American governors are blaming Canad...

For years I've been writing Op Eds and trying to get them in to mainstream media outlets. For years they have turned me down. Even if I'm writing about something topical, immediate and of the moment, it's always no thanks. I began to realize that because most of what I write is deeply critical of Big Tech, they just don't want to print what I have to say. If I tell people how easy it is to live without the tech giants or social media, if I tell them how much happier I am, then I...

Apparently i have to rewrite books like five times before they're any good. The thing is, they are good to start off. Perfectly good enough. Just not yet PERFECT. Gah. (she says, writing version 5 of the Opt Out book this summer)

It was never safe to put pics of your kids on social media. People thought I was crazy for taking such a hard line on this. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2026/jul/03/ai-sexual-abuse-fears-uk-parents-warned-posting-images-children-national-crime-agency

On this #CanadaDay I'm struck by how few Americans know their government and the Russians are involved in a psyop in Alberta to incite a separatist movement. The goal: force a populist referendum to leave #Canada and join the #USA. Albertans are being swayed by glitzy YouTube influencer videos, many of which are #AI generated abroad,, to suggest their lives would be better in the US. You know, Florida mansions, control over immigration, pristine health care, high valued US dollar, and other...

McSweeneys on #Ai#economics "Benjamin owns a farm. He employs 100 workers plowing his fields. His total payroll is $10 million/year. One day, he buys a mule, which provides the worker who uses it with a modest 10 percent productivity gain. Benjamin fires 99 of his workers and purchases 99 mules, expecting a 1,000 percent productivity gain. The driverless mules cause plow damage to his property in excess of $50 million. Benjamin loses another $5 million due to the loss of productivity from...

#News sites run software that detects every visitor's clicks, scrolls, and shares. That's how they know which stories get our attention, which sell to more eyeballs, and which do not. That's how they know how many more of a certain kind of story, about a certain someone, they should run. Sometimes a certain event grabs all the headlines above the fold. Sometimes people aim to grab all the headlines above the fold. Sometimes individuals game the news so that it is all abo...

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@evacide/116438525414891868 Fifteen years ago a Ph.D. student I worked with, Sarah Brayne (now prof at Stanford), was conducting her fieldwork at the LAPD into this new phenomenon, "predictive policing." It was early in the Big Data days. She came back with stories of this company, Palantír, backed by the CIA's Venture Capital wing (yes that's a thing apparently) that the LAPD was using to target pre-crime. They would purchase data sets...

If you're working on the #cybercleanse this week and the data map is dragging you down, did you know you can look up all the SSO's that you use via Google? Apparently you can here: https://myaccount.google.com/connections A great opportunity to look these up and disentangle from Google, one login at a time. See if you can log in to the service and direct your account to a new masked email address and password. Save these in your password manager and -- voila! Does anyone have...

"This is not a story about how AI works. It’s not about whether it is going to become sentient, make us rich, or redundant. It is a story about power. It is about how politicians became distracted by a shiny new thing, and failed to understand – or chose not to ask – what it might cost. It is not about whether AI will help itself to your job. It is about whether the people who make AI are helping themselves to your country." Every story about AI should start this way. See thi...

#Samsung is shutting down its text messenging app and forcing people onto #Google for SMS and MMS. At #techreclaimers we have been discussing alternatives to avoid Google. Several Reclaimers recommend Fossify Messages and Fossify Contacts as a good alternative, others have used Textra, and we'd all love to know about more options that keep your data private and sovereign. If you've never met an #astronaut they are incredible humans. Generous, kind, whip smart, 360 thinkers, both brilliant in a team and terrific in leadership, exceptionally skilled, and genuinely good, big-hearted people to boot. Thanks to my time working with #NASA I am convinced they actually do represent the best of us. All four of the #Artemis astronauts flying on this lunar mission are extraordinary human beings. Godspeed to them, whenever they launch.
