There have been many visions of a better future for the whole world. And most people would probably rather live in that world. But we have never found the path. No one has described it. No one has envisioned how to make the journey. If we don’t know the way, we can never get there.

I love Earth. But I wonder if life here went down a bad path—maybe apes, mammals, animals, or something older—setting the stage for intelligent life to destroy itself. There&#39;s no guarantee we will avoid catastrophe. Are there species on other planets that are less ruthless? If there is a mass extinction, might it prune that bad branch, so future intelligent species might have a better chance? Or is this inherent in biology? Is intelligence always paired with a drive to consume all?

@Dianora I remember it whenever the weather gets similar. Although I have more vivid personal memories of one from the 80s (‘87?), which was the first time I ever saw everything—even blades of grass—coated with ice. The ‘98 one I mostly remember all the news about Quebec being without power. I don’t remember any personal experiences. I was in Toronto. I’m sure the TTC was down or something.

Imagine two lists. The first is all the problems and challenges and risks faced by society. The second is all the ideas for new tech dreamed up by eager entrepreneurs. How many of the former are directly addressed by the latter? The mismatch seems to only get worse. Hello? McFly?

When liberalism becomes a minority opinion, how should liberals respond? I don’t know if we’re there yet, but we seem to be close. And as more people face increasingly difficult life situations, the numbers are only going to worsen.
