I love Earth. But I wonder if life here went down a bad path—maybe apes, mammals, animals, or something older—setting the stage for intelligent life to destroy itself. There's no guarantee we will avoid catastrophe. Are there species on other planets that are less ruthless? If there is a mass extinction, might it prune that bad branch, so future intelligent species might have a better chance? Or is this inherent in biology? Is intelligence always paired with a drive to consume all?
