As an American, I feel like I only hear about British politicians that people detest. Do you want to tell me about any that you admire?

    TIL that one can use for<'a> syntax in a return position trait bound, like this: fn foo() -> impl for<'a> binrw::BinWrite<Args<'a> = ()> { ... } #rust #rustlang

    "Anything that is in the world when you're born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works. Anything that's invented between when you're fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things." --Douglas Adams, as quoted by @pluralistic

    Being willing to put an extraordinary amount of time into a project is a superpower. It means you can do things no one else can.

    At the KVMR Celtic Fair this weekend, a fencing group just a few yards from us was giving out roses to the winners of each duel. They seemed to be sending out runners with them to people nearby. When one of them ran by, I said, "Oh, how sweet, is that for me?" They replied, "No, but the next one will be," and sure enough, 10 minutes later, they brought one to me. They gave me the second one afterward and I don't know why. Maybe because I wore the rose...

    Yesterday I was playing a board game with friends in which one tries to identify colors (one out of hundreds of colors) with one- or two-word hints. You aren't allowed to just say color names, you have to hint at them. My one-word hint for a shade of purple didn't work out well, so for the two-word hint I said, "Wonka Beauregarde" and 2 out of 3 players got it immediately. The other one just looked at me like I was crazy.

    CS papers used to be printed for publication and collected proceedings were given to conference-goers and mailed to subscribers. This is hardly the case anymore. The 2-column PDF-based format for papers assumes this usage, and it's relatively hard to read on a screen. It's overdue for replacement.

    Trump is acting like a king and attacking the pope, so his next step is obviously to form the Church of America.

    I learned something cool from John McWhorter's NYT article today. He says: > The “s” in “island” was added because the Latin word was “insula” I didn't realize that the words "island" and "peninsula" were related, but now it seems evident that the "pen" prefix must be the same one in "penultimate". It's almost an island!

    What if all these "orbiting data center" proposals are really elaborate tax and fraud havens? Who collects taxes on revenues that are collected 1000 miles above international waters? Who prosecutes Ponzi schemes that are perpetrated there?

    My electric teakettle has 0.5L marked on it as minimum and 1.7L as maximum. That makes sense. It also has 1.2L marked on it. What is special about 1.2L?

    In #Rust, `struct S<T>` yields a compiler error, but `fn f<T>() {}` does not even yield a warning. Why not? #rustlang
